Model 36, Detective Special or Model 10 snubs?? What's Your Favorite??

HI there! I'm glad you love the thread. I love discussing guns, and I love trying to come up with topics that make people want to respond! This one is turning out to be great so far! I love that Model 10!! I'm also very VERY happy to see you have magna grips on that bad boy. I am a magna grip freak. I want nothing but those grips on any Smith I buy, from J frame - N frame and snub - 4 inch! I love them!! Someone on here told me they aren't called magna grips on Colts, but the magna "style" grips that the first 2 issue DS's came with, I would want those on a 1st or 2nd issue DS AND on a 3rd issue. Don't know if you saw the picture I out up earlier of a 3rd issue with pearl magna style grips, but I LOVE them on those DS's!! I love that they stop short of the top, but I don't care much for the Smith service grips that stop short. I feel like Smith's lacks something that the Colts have with that shorter grip. Nice gun!!

Thank you! These aren't the originals grips (those are tucked away) but I love how these looked when I got them. Check out Altamont (if you haven't already) - they have some very nice offerings!

With regards to shooting revolvers, the larger K-frame or DS are more pleasant. With regards to carrying, the J-frame gives me more options.

When I’m carrying a round gun, my Model 10 snub is back-up to my Model 58.

I really like the 57's and 58's. I saw a Model 57 at a gun show the other week, in 4 inch blued. Beautiful gun, in mint condition. I like them and I like the idea of the 41 mag. Stronger than a 357 I'm sure, but less recoil that a 44 so possibly better accuracy.

Re: the older Colt revolvers w/the exposed ejector rod I did bend one, but not the way most would think. I was carrying my issued 4” Colt walking my beat one night when I tried to arrest a drunk. He wasn’t going so the fight was on and I was working solo. Tried the night stick and he took it and threw it away. Blackjack next but I missed and dropped it. He landed on top of me and I was about to shoot when I decided to use the Colt as a club, and it worked. After I put him in cuffs I noticed I’d bent the rod into the barrel. It was repaired by the dept. gunsmith and I got ribbed in roll call for awhile.

Dang man, sorry to hear about that!! I know people give police a hard time over dumb stuff, but I can't imagine the things y'all go through day in and day out! I was going to go into law enforcement once I first started college, but I ultimately decided against it. The reason I decided against it was because I already had a huge dislike for people as a whole and that dislike has turned into a bitter hatred almost 20 years later. Had I went into law enforcement, don't get me wrong I know there are plenty of positives as well, but after dealing with that end of society on a daily basis, I think I would've disappeared to some remote island a long time ago just to get away from people. I wouldn't be able to take the disrespect, the hatred, the ignorant stuff people do, and I'd have a really hard time keeping my cool if I ever encountered someone who hurt/killed a child or worse. I don't know that I'd have it in me to restrain myself and have any regard for their "rights" and safety. So in short I commend you and all the other law enforcement officers out there risking your lives to make sure we get to keep on having the freedoms we enjoy and so often take for granted. Thank you to all of you, and to all our service members at home and abroad.

I really dig that Detective Special/Cobra and that pre-Model 10! Beautiful! I do like that there are so many options in the J frame dept. There is just so much to choose from, past and present! I do love a few Colts DS DB and Pocket Positive, but I find I love far more Smith models than I do Colt. I also like that Smith offered such a wide array of models as well. Colt seems as though they were a bit limited in the number of different models they offered. Not knocking Colt, just commending Smith.

I almost forgot!! here's my 49:

It is certainly a viable option!!

Question for ya Les, is that pic of Lee Marvin from the movie Point Blank?

No, the picture that I use as my avatar is from a publicity still from an old TV show, "M Squad", from the late 1950s.

Here's a short clip from one episode...not a very good one, but I can't seem to find any right now....

M SQUAD [1957-1960] - YouTube

In this show, Lee Marvin played Lt. Frank Ballenger of a special squad of the Chicago Police Department. I always liked Marvin, he was a Marine in WWII, and was wounded in the fighting on Iwo Jima, IIRC.

I have the whole series on DVD!!

How about the 2” model 64? That’s my favorite. I’d pick that over the DS, 10 or 36!

I guess I should've written in that stainless models count or also Airweight guns as well as different variations of the 36, such as the 38 & 49, 40 & 42, 30 & 31, 32 & 33,et cetera. I guess I just felt it was implied, but I didn't really think about all the different options. I was trying to keep it simple. What I should've said was, detective special or Caliber variations, model 36 or its variations and the 10 and variations. Although that could bring up all different things, so I tried to keep it simple. My 15-3 snub is essentially a variation of the Model 10 as well, but I didn't want this to go all over the place. I should do a thread that says J frame, K frame or D frame? Answers on this have already spread out a bit as it is, but if I asked that it would've been crazy. Thanks for participating.

My EDC is a Colt DS.

I like all three. But the DS is my favorite. It's like the perfect cross between the 10 and the 36. Just as easy to carry concealed as the 36, but with the extra round of the 10.

That is a very reasonable answer. I can dig that. I'm hoping to own a couple of each of each one day

Nice! I see he's carrying an old Smith as well!! This show is NOT the Mod Squad correct?? I'm pretty sure the Mod Squad was 70's, so M Squad should be a different show. I will have to check this out, I LOVE absolutely LOVE old TV shows and movies! Some of my favorite TV shows include Richard Diamond: Private Detective, anything Hitchcock, the Lawless Years with James Gregory, Suspicion, Climax!, Rawhide, Peter Gunn, 77 Sunset Strip, Twilight Zone, and the list goes on and on. Too many movies to name too. If you're a Marvin fan you've probably seen Point Blank, if not I recommend it. It was based off of the same hook that the movie Payback was with Mel Gibson. Pretty similar plots, but different overall.

I’m a model 10 fan. But I have and do carry sometimes a 642.

I love the Model 10's so much. I want to get a blued and nickel snub in round butt AND square butt so bad. One day I will have them. I wouldn't mind a Model 12 or two, but I prefer full weight guns. I can't wait til the day comes that I have all 4 and have a display case with a velvet lining for all 4.

I really enjoyed Mel Gibson in "Payback". It has become a go to movie for me.

I agree, I can't turn it off if I start it. It's a great movie. I saw there is a Director's Cut which was how the director originally wanted it to be and it's not nearly as good. I picked it up at Disc Replay (don't know if they have those around you or not) for 3 bucks used. Nice place, every movie is in mint condition for usually 3 bucks. The movie is weird in the DC, a woman plays Kristopher son's (spelling?) part and I don't think you ever see her. They also have a completely different ending and it takes place at an L train station. I don't know where the movie was shot, but in the DC it looks a lot like Chicago. I believe it's supposed to take place in Chicago anyhow, but I don't believe they ever say. I like the original version best. Gibson didn't like the DC so he changed it up to the movie we know. I'm glad he did, it was much better that way. Still I had to see it just to say I saw it.

Also, don’t forget the Centennial style J frames. They will not catch on clothing as the hammer is completely enclosed in the frame. Here are my four modern Centennials:

les-b-albums-some-of-my-j-frame-s-and-ws-picture16725-top-down-model-340-pd-357-shipped-october-2nd-2014-model-m-p-340-357-shipped-october-29th-2011-model-640-1-pro-series-357-model-640-1-357-shipped-july-1999-a.jpeg

I mostly carry the 340 PD, (top gun in the above photo) which is the lightest at a bit over 11 ounces empty!! Of course that comes with a price to be paid in recoil, which can be fierce, it it sure is comfortable to carry.

Best Regards, Les

I see you like the internal hammer guns! I like the 38's and the 49's a lot, not a fan of the 40's & 42's. I like having the option for single action if I choose.

I like that the shrouded hammer ones don't snag, but I have made it a habit of placing my thumb on the hammer spur as I draw it. That way it essentially acts like a shroud for the hammer. That way, if I choose I can just drop my thumb down into place or I can cock the hammer in one swift motion as I draw it if I want to. I have practiced it over and over and over so now it's just second nature to do it that way, plus it used to rip holes in my pocket! Haha, I had to sew my pocket up on 2 pants a couple times. That the reason I started doing it that way. The top, regular pockets on my cargo pants, they are angled so it slips right in and hides easily, but pulling it out without putting my thumb in the spur it was hell on my pockets.

My carry gun is a J frame, Model 649-3 chambered for .357. Packs a healthy punch and is easy to pocket or carry IWB. However, I can't begin to tell you how much I love my K frame snubs (12, 15, 64). They are all on duty right now as home defense guns.

I don't know of I responded to this or not, but I love K frame guns. There are so many I want. My only one is my 15-3 blued snub and I absolutely love it. One of my 4 or 5 all time favorite handguns in the world. Definitely my favorite 38 special ever.

Went to small local gun show today.....

Tossed between a very nice 10-5 2” snubby and pristine Model 36 with box (not matched to gun), all papers and wrapped toolkit.

Already have 19-5 and 66-4 both in 2-1/2” which are mostly relegated to range duty so I walked out with the 36 for about $200 less than the best haggle price for the 10-5.....it was a struggle though!
