Model 36 No Dash

I have a model 36, no dash, serial 607637. I have information that says it was made before 1967 because of the dash one came about in 1967. Then I have info on 1968 because of the serial number and no diamond grips.

I know S&W did things in different manners and different times with most things cast in jello.

Can anyone put a better guess on what year this may have been manufactured/shipped?

Smith tracks shipping dates, not manufacturing dates. Sometimes they were close to each other. Sometimes not. According to the 4th edition the number 786544 started off 1969. We have a member here with an extensive personal set of records on J-frames and I expect he will jump in with pretty decent information.

Mine is a No Dash.

The point he was making is that the Model 36-1 did not replace the Model 36, it was a different configuration and was available concurrently with the Model 36 until 1988. At that time, the Model 36-2 replaced the Model 36 and the Model 36-3 replaced the Model 36-1.

Nobody directly addressed your question.

Base on only two diverse entries in the database, I would guess
mid-1968 is a good estimate for a ship date for yours, especially
since you allude your Chiefs Special has matching-serial number
stocks with no diamonds.

The two entries are these:

Model 36 597497 shipped in April 1968 (matching-s/n no-diamond
stocks)

Model 37 618868 shipped in April 1968

(Models 36 and 37 ship dates are rarely in sync.)

Mine is a No Dash.

So it either has a 2" or 3" lightweight barrel.
