Picked up this nice little Model 36 with grips numbered to frame, shiny bore and cylinders, very nice mechanical condition, and diamond grips but not a flat latch.

Could you help me with the approximate shipping/production date of this gun?

Thanks!

1962 = starts at 295000
1969 = ends at 786544

Some where in between but after they transitioned to the 3rd style latch and before they dropped the diamonds.

Thank you for the responses. I thought when looking at the serial numbers and the diamond grips it was a 64ish year, but the more modern non-flat latch makes me think more '66 or '67.

Thank you all for for taking the time to look at my posting and replying. People like you make this forum such a wonderful experience.

Picked up this nice little Model 36 . . . has diamond grips but not a flat latch . . . Could you help me with the approximate shipping/production date of this 4XXXXX serial numbered gun?

Very likely 1966.

We don't have enough of the serial number to get much closer than Alan's 1966 . . . but here are some in the mid-4XXXXX range that might help you get closer.

456212 shipped Sept 1966
457962 shipped Jan 1967
458810 shipped Dec 1966

Russ

edit to add: your cylinder release style (replacing the flat latch) began in approximately May 1966

I apologize for being so limiting on the serial #: 451XXX

With my 451XXX serial number, your September 1966 456212 serial number, diamond grips numbered to the frame, and the May 1966 change from the flat latch to my cylinder release latch an April/May/June 1966 date might be a good approximation.

That is close enough and you all did great work. Thank you!

Interesting a higher numbered s/n shipped a month earlier. I have the same situation. I have a higher numbered K-22 that shipped a month earlier that the lower numbered one. They are separated by only 5 numbers.

Shipping out of serial number sequence is pretty common. Once the factory stamped the s/n, no attempt was made to complete them in serial number sequence. Finished guns would be placed in the vault as they were completed and pulled at random to fill orders. Fast moving models might be weeks or months out of sequence (such as the model 36 and K-22 examples) but slower moving models might be years out of sequence.
