Well today I cleaned the three inch barreled model 36 I bought a few weeks ago. Man was it dirty, I bet I spent an hour or so cleaning the bore. I finally had to resort to Hoppes #9 to get it clean. I've read on this forum for light surface rust you can use brass wool to remove it? Any other tricks for removing light rust or should I give up? She was made in 1971 when I was a sophomore in high school. It has the square butt.

Bronze wool is the best. 0000 steel wool is adequate, but not as safe as bronze. Use the Hoppes, or a light oil, liberally and rub the surface rust lightly. Most will come off and you'll kill the active stuff. You'll likely still see some staining, so don't get too aggressive trying to remove every last speck or you'll risk getting into the bluing.
