Hello S&W enthusiasts.
New member and my first post. Just joined today. I need some information if you may be so kind. I have had my fathers 38 spl. for years (inherited.) I am curious about the age of the gun and some appropriate ammo also.

Some info; 38 SPL. CTG. S.N. J89774 Hand ejector with a 2" barrel, fixed sights and 2 side plate screws.

Any info and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Welcome!

A model 37 with a J serial number prefix and five digits is likely from 1969-1970. The third sideplate screw is hiding under the right stock panel. Enjoy!

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

You have a nice Chiefs Special. Great family heirloom.

The J+five digit serial numbers began in 1969 and ran through
mid-1970. Smith & Wesson neither produced nor shipped guns in
serial number order, and it seems the J+5 serials are crazier than
most serial number series. Here are two examples:

J99175 shipped in August 1969; it's also a Model 37 Airweight

my J75846 shipped in March 1970; it's a Model 36 (carbon steel)

Yours might have shipped somewhere around those two. Does it
have a blue finish and a round butt (like the photo)?
