This model 40 ND is somewhat unique in that the serial number is beyond the era of the 4th sideplate screw. The sn 179xx puts it in the early 60's, but Smith discontinued the upper screw in the early 50's. It has a beautiful high polish and a somewhat unusual contour to the trigger guard. The is no evidence that it received a blow to the guard. A prized personal J frame.

Cool gun! Are you aware there is a pin stored in the frame that can be used to pin down the grip safety?

There's been some higher numbered four screws reported.
Two on posted in the thread Early Cennial Airweight Befuddlement on the other S&W forum

serial 18,098: (C), flat latch v2, 4 screw, MOD40, grooved trigger, nickel

serial 20,965: (C), flat latch v2, 4screw, MOD42, grooved trigger

I'm not sure about that collector's flat latch typology. Not that its wrong. I just don't know what v2 is.

(I'm not a member there so can't ask)

Two-bit cowboy's flat latch typology seems to be the most complete. see post 9
