Who has owned one of these bad boys before? I just "won" one from you know where. Anyone have any cool stories about theirs? It's the only scandium semi-auto listed in the 3rd generation catalog. Did anyone buy one brand new in 2003-2005?

I picked up a beater one for a couple hundred bucks a few years ago. One of these days, I’m going to bead blast it or something and ceracote it…or not. I like the way it shoots and it’s darn reliable. If I ever come across a nice one at a gun show or see one advertised locally, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up.

There was a post a while back that had a link to mags for these . I actually bought 3 hoping that someday I'd find one . Wishful thinking ......

you might be in luck

There is one on the big auction site right now with a few days left. It's not that bad right now. it comes with 2 mags and the original box.

any time you can pick up any of these for a couple bills - thats a good day regardless of condition. I recently bought a beat up cs9 for 3 bills and felt good about it

Don’t have a cool story really other than how I got one.

Was picking up at my receiving FFL place and while waiting I saw another 3rd Gen. Thought it was a 3914NL at first. It appeared different so I looked at it. Never paid attention to 4040PD’s so asked about them here.

It was $429.00 OTD, (in 2020,) as new in box w/all and extras. I went back the next day and got it. Nice pistols.

The flat base mags were available at Gun Mag Warehouse for $28.00 but none are left. Seems “some” people were buying them for 9mm purposes. 🤬

Even though it’s said that the 4040PD is the same size as the 3913/14NL’s/LS’s they are not. I have a really nice leather paddle holster for my 3913NL and my 4040PD will NOT fit in it. The holster is very tight for the 3913NL and won’t except the 4040PD. Of course the 4040PD fits ok in any of my 3913/6906 holsters.

finding one in the wild for a great deal like that is a pretty cool story Jim! and yes finding extra mags will be A challenge luckily this one came with 2 and the other that's live on the big site right now also is like new in box with 2 mags. I hope someone snatches it up!

Watch here for 4040PD magazine’s in the WTT/WTS section.

As I kinda said, there was a discussion here about using these inexpensive factory 4040PD mags for 9mm applications.

Thankfully some who got them decided they were better suited for the original intended use.

Edit. Just realized this input won’t make any sense since I was replying to your last post. Yours will be zapped since you are mentioning a current auction on GB. Guess we’ll just see though huh?

yes I read about those mags being bought up and I know who you're referring to. I'm hoping with all the talk and growing popularity with the old smith's that someone would start making components for them again. mags, parts, holsters, etc.. but I won't hold my breath !

I snagged mine off Guns.com for cheap a few years back. Love mine, it is such a soft shooter.

Here's an outdated group picture of my autos with my 4040PD in the bunch.

Beautiful collection although i'm sure you've added more just like we all do frequently haha

Yeah, added to the stable is a 745, 3906, a 4516-1, a 5903SSV, and a 5903.

Not trying to disagree but since the 4040PD has the angled lower dust shield & (mine) measures slightly wider (top of the slide to the dust shield/frame in front of the trigger guard) than my 3914s do, I would have thought the opposite, that a 4040PD would fit tighter in a 3913 holster?

I don't have any holsters made specifically for the 3913 but I did have Nelson Holsters make me two holster specifically for my 4040PD as he had the mold for it.

The 4040PD fits snug in the two holsters & my 3914/3914DAOs & my 3913TSW all fit slightly less snug in them, because their dust shield/frame are straight, not angled.

Don't know why that's opposite from your findings?

I had two 4040PDs at one time. I bought them new when the gun came out. The gun had a lot of the positive handling attributes of the 3914 series guns.

My experience with the 4040s was so so. I had a couple of parts breakages including a magazine the self destructed durring a firing sequence.

I believe the little ball bearing that is unique to the 4040PD magazine went AWOL under recoil.

Maybe I got unlucky with mine. I don't know.

I was fortunate that I bought mine new and at a time when Smith was still repairing the things.

I came away thinking that the .40S&W round might be just a little too much for the platform as my experiences with 3913s, 3953s, ... had been excellent.

Your milage may very. I'm just reporting what I experienced.
