Hello

New member here. I recently acquired a model 41 with 3 barrels.

Serial number is 9421.

I'm curious is this was produced as a 3 barrel set and what is the date of production?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

James

A quick reply would be that a 3 barrel set wasn't an option. Others with more 41 experience will correct me if I mispoke.

The bottom (top?) third barrel looks to be of a different vintage, the rear sight is different. The 2 extra barrels were most likely sourced separately.

Serial number looks be early production.

The serial number indicates a first year production gun, 1957. That would have come equipped with a 7 3/8" barrel with muzzle brake. The 5" light field barrel was introduced in 1959, the 5 1/2" heavy barrel in 1963. S&W never catalogued a 3 barrel set or a 2 barrel set either. So what you have is an early production gun and two later added barrels. Nice set! Do you have the muzzle brake for the original long barrel?

Thank you.

That's all I have.

Any idea of value on these?

James

My local gun store had a used Model 41 with the factory box that had both the 7 3/8" barrel and the heavy 5 1/2" barrel. I almost bought the boxed set, but the finish had not been cared for.

I like the idea of the light field barrel. I was unaware of that option.

At my LGS a couple years ago, they had obviously bought someone's large, very nice collection, all for sale in the used pistol cabinet. I saw a 41 in a really large blue factory box with those three barrels included, one on the gun and the other two in relieved slots in the cardboard, along with barrel weights. I had a 7" and a 5" 41 already, so I opted for a very nice Model 14. I kinda regret passing on the 41 set, but the 14 filled a hole, and the 41 was redundant except for the field barrel.

Mod 41 5.5" Heavy Barrels used a different rear sight than the 5" and 7 1/2" barrels. The 5.5 Heavy barrel used the same sight as the Model 52

A nice collection but could not have been shipped as a set as Fullmetaljacket explained. Number 9421 is a 1958 pistol. The 5” field barrel was first shipped in September 1959 and the 5 1/2” heavy barrel was introduced in August 1963.

Still a nice start to a model 41 collection. My favorite fun shooter is the field barrel.

I remember in the late 80s or 90s field barrels were availalbe occasionally in Shotgun News. Wish I had acted then. Wonder why S&W doesn't do so today? Occasional runs of other barrels are made. I picked up a 5 in HB a few years ago.

When I bought my used, 1977 era Model 41 seven or eight years ago there was also a 7 3/8" barrel of somewhat earlier vintage included along with a set of weights, false muzzle and muzzle brake. Some previous owner had skillfully cut the bottom of the box insert out to accommodate the extra barrel. The end label on the box indicated that it shipped as a 5 1/2" HB gun. So it seems not an unusual thing for owners in the past to make up their own multi-barrel sets.

The last time one of those Field Barrels came up for sale I believe it sold for around $500. They are said to give the gun a whole different feel than the heavy barrels which I can certainly see. I'd like to have one but I'd need to find one at a bargain price !
