Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has more detailed information on serial numbers for Model 41's

As previously posted i j=have just purchased a m41 - from what the dealer says is a 1968 year of manufacture.

I have looked up the Standard Catalog of S&W and all it lists ia a date range between 1954 and 1970.
So I know that mine is prior to 1970 as it does not have a prefix latter (or suffix for that matter).

It has a German Proof mark (Egeal with a N i=under it and the numbers 68 and what I believe is the Ulm antler mark after the 68.

So does anyone have information on the exact year for this serial number 92xxx?

(If the full number is needed - then contact me and i can provide).
Thanks for any Help

Please read the introduction to Appendix B of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson (page 486 of the fourth edition):

“It is vitally important to realize that it is impossible to identify the production year of any given single gun using these tables alone. Smith & Wesson revolvers were not necessarily assembled nor shipped in serial number sequence”

Examples from my list:
91787 May 67
92290 June 68
94999 July 67
95461 July 67

Your M41 is most likely a 1967 but easily could be a 1968 model.

Hi,
thanks for info-

I have the 4th edition and had seen that - but also had seen elsewhere on this forum that maybe (and only maybe :-) ) someone could narrow it down for me a bit more. (from extra experience in looking at this kind of stuff - etc).

I was also looking at page 490 where the semi auto pistols are listed. see the info on it about the way serial numbers were allocated (or rather that they were put on all calibres and shipped - as you say - in and out of sequence.
I'm pretty sure that proof mark is close enough (the slide also has the cocking indicator- to date it from a specification level - or limit its date to prior a certain date. ).
I'm pretty pleased with the pistol regardless, just be nice to nail more info down if i could :-)

Thanks again!
Liam
