Forum Members, I am new here and may be postinng the wrong place, admin please feel free to move it if necessary. At any rate I am a junior and collegiate pistol coach here in ohio. One of my shooters has aquired a 7in model 41 barrel. I have no idea the age of it, the engraving/etching is white in color. My question is the rear sight, does anyone have any idea who made it or where I may go to find out? Thanks

There have been several versions of the rear sight on the Model 41 barrels. The white lettering may or may not be factory. Sometimes people fill in the lettering with white or gold paint so it stands out.

I believe the older barrels had rear sights made by S&W while some of the more recent ones from the 1980s on up may have Millet or Keng sights.

Does the barrel look like the top two shown in the picture below?

Does the barrel have a muzzle brake like the ones below?

Civil,
the barrel in question does not resemble any of these. It has no brake or adjustable weight(where did you get that?) nor does the sight resemble any of those you have pictured. Thanks for trying tho. I dont think the engraving is filled with anything aftermarket but I may be mistaken.
Thanks again
Fred

P.S.The real question is how far is one clic of elevation supposed to move the point of impact? Are they 1 moa clicks and if so at what distance?

You can view a PDF of the current Model 41 Owner's Manual by going to the Smith & Wesson site and clicking on Customer Service. The procedure for adjusting the rear sight is on Page 23 but they don't give any info on how much the POI changes per click.

Smith & Wesson offered externally mounted three piece steel or aluminum weight sets for the Model 41 up through the 1970s. They were intended for use on the original 7 3/8" barrel (and some of the early 7" barrels which had the required grooves). There were also steel and aluminum internal weights which screwed into a cavity below the muzzle. See below:

Civil,
Thanks for the pictures, I have never seen this set up until now. I do recall seeing a barrel with two "extra cuts" in the front but had no iea what it was for. One of my barrels has the screw in weights in the front of it. It is my favorite of the long barrels for some reason.
Thanks too for thelink to the pamphlet. We are not having trouble doing the actual adjusting I just dont have any idea how much the poi is "supposed " to be moving.

Thanks

Fred:
If I remember correctly, at a 50' distance, on the standard B2 slow fire target, it was 2 clicks per ring. Once adjusted to the brand of ammo (try lots of different ones as that's the secret to .22RF accuracy) it would probably not be moved again as long as you stay with the same ammo. Keep in mind two identical guns may not like the same brand of ammo. I know, makes it a little difficult stocking ammo for the team.
