My first Model 41 was an unfired from 1980 and I knew very little except that it had the box, etc. I recently bought another made in 1982 and the stocks are different. The stocks on the first one do not extend below the bottom of the magazine. The box label for the first one is blank under "stocks." I do not have the box for the second one. On the second, they are swelled at the base and extend about 3/16" below the magazine. My question is, are they both S&W? Thanks in advance

The one on the left I am assuming is the "first one". That pistol appears to be a cut-down 7 1/2 inch barrel from the muzzle profile. If that was sold to you as an unfired pistol, It might be unfired but it appears to have been heavily messed with. The one on the right, does appear to be in as-issued condition. Whether it has been fired or not you can't tell from here.

I hope the pistol on the right is your original

Sorrily, the one on the left is the original one I purchased. It was unfired, but the stocks had either been swapped to another and the cut-down and sanded ones substituted. The gun shop was south of Phoenix and they had it on consignment, but when I checked back, they had no info. The one on the right is the 1982 I just picked up with both barrels and a spare slide for $1K.

I believe that could well be a field barrel as opposed to a cut-off barrel. I forgot the field barrels had that funky look. I wonder if Smith made the field barrels by milling down a standard 7/1/2 barrel?
