Hi, can someone point me to a place to find help on a detailed disassembly of my model 41. Yes, a full strip, not just a field strip.

Many thanks!

Thanks Kevin, but that is not a full strip. It’s good, but doesn’t take it all the way down. I find reference to a manual that apparently used to be out there but the links do not work. I’ve even seen reference that the link you provided used to go further. Still hoping someone has a copy or another link that goes all the way. Thanks!

There was a website that had a 100% full detail strip and reassembly (in fact I am the one who posted it here - years ago) however the website has been taken down as of about 3 years ago and I have never been able to find it again.

There might be a printed "shop"manual" but if there is I am unaware of it. I have also not been able to find a S&W Armorers Manual for the M41 and am not even sure if one can be gotten. The M41 is a tough gun to get info on - that's for sure.

I am certainly not a professional Gunsmith and am 100% self taught. Pretty much every gun I have dived into, I have figured out piece by piece on my own by just using mechanical ability and common sense. Most of it is just mechanical ability, familiarity with firearms in general and good ole' common sense and yes, some are tougher and more complicated than others. I will admit that some are a royal pain in the butt - but once you do figure it out, you will never forget.

I have gone farther into disassembly of the M41 than just the standard Field Strip, however I have not quite done a 100% full disassembly due to the fact that I have not yet needed to. If that day ever comes I will do it but again I own this gun since 1979, shot it often and have net needed to do so. Unless you have a specific reason to replace an internal spring or part, the M41 is better left intact for anything much beyond the Field Strip.

Exception: Replacement of the Extractor is a common repair or service and only involves removing a pin - an easy task that is outlined by available instructions posted online.

Quite often these videos only go as far as the filmer and/or the factory thinks it is advisable that the average gun owner should go. In fact in many of them they just flatly say you shouldn't go any farther. If you think that you are that good then a parts diagram should be all you need. Sorry, that sounds a little snarky but I couldn't think of another way to say it. You get the gist.
Why do you think you need to go farther? Dirty, need to replace an obviously bad part, or just plain curious? I'm guilty of the latter. I've got a friends Rem 66 Nylon that I can't get back together. Should have stopped.

Thanks Chief. It’s the same dead end I keep finding. It was like that was for me on finding a good tear down for the Ruger Mark pistols and the Ruger P Series so I pieced together what I could learn from others and made videos for myself so I would never forget. I hope to do the same for the Model 41. Some guns trip me up, like the first time I tore down a PA63 (turned out the frame was not finished correctly), but so far I have zero boxes of failures.

I’ll give it a go some day, probably this winter, and let you guys know if I figured it all out. If so, I’ll video it and hopefully help the next guy. I found I can post my videos on YT and have them saved in the cloud for myself and others. Anyone with a copy of the now deleted instructions, even crude directions, all helps. Thanks!

Thanks Jag and Tim! I do have a couple schematics now and I’m hoping that will do it. Some guns just have a certain sequencing, like the final steps to the Ruger Mark pistol. I’m just hoping to not break something because I went in the wrong order. The great thing is that parts are everywhere now days.

My amateur YT is TomD Gunnery if you are curious about what I’m hoping to do with a full tear down. Mostly it’s because I like to see how things work but also, I picked up an absolutely filthy 1967 model 41 at auction and would like to make it like new again.

I still haven't got the nerve to take down my Ruger Mark II. They say its easy once you get the knack of it. I too just recently got my first 41 but it is pretty clean. Youtube shows barrel and slide removal, that's as far as I'm going. What has worked fairly well, sometimes you can only go so far, is just really flood it with something like CLP and blast with compressed air. It really works quite well. I eventually bought a bigger compressor (on wheels) and find it really does a great job.

Here is the link for the full takedown one. I did both a field strip video and a full take down video. My complete video is on the Mark I but it’s not a stretch to apply it to your Mark II. Mainly the trigger pin is simpler on the Mark II. You just push down on a retaining spring instead of dealing with the horrid E-clip they used on the Mark I. And you have a safety to maneuver on the Mark II but it’s intuitive once you see it. Ping me if you try it and get stuck.

So far, so good! Until the one pin that should be the easiest, the trigger pin. That was a surprise because that's how you do the trigger pull adjustment. I think the last owner welded that thing in. Project on hold waiting for ordered cupped punches. This thing isn't so bad, really. I'll bet the beautiful rounded pins are what intimidate the most. No one want's to hit one of them. I've ordered a couple spares just in case but hopefully with the right tool they will pop right out. May think about using my sight removal tool to ease it out. I'll let you know. Thanks again to all for the great help!
