Just in case anyone in NM is looking for a Model 46, I saw one today that was quite nice. Ron Petersen's guns had it. 5 1/2" barrel, serial number 72827, unaltered slide (still has 90 cut, rather than radius at the front), and I'd say it was 99% finish. One or two extremely minor marks in the finish...really minor...and the grips (wood) were like new. I think it was marked at $789, which seemed a bit high, but this was a really clean gun. R,

Tom,

I'm a newb at 41/46 details, so I may have explained it incorrectly. I thought that the part of the slide where it meets the front of the frame (sort of the inside angle) was radiused on all 41s and square on early 46's, but that they changed to a radius in that area due to cracks forming at that point.

The front of the frame on this gun has a dustcover (not sure if that's S&W's term, but it is on a 1911) with a right angle rather than a radius at the very top front part where it meets the slide and the slide matches it perfectly.

Did I get something confused here? R,

The radius is where the slide body steps down to the slide extensions,at the inside turn....maybe a better way to say that, but that's the best I can do right now.

As Camster notes - at juncture of slide body and slide rails. The slides were changed to a radius design around the 25000 range.
G-ManBart, we all continue to learn and the S-W Forum is a great place for us to learn and exchange info.

Okay, now I've got it...thanks. I'd noticed that where the very forward part of the slide rails meets the barrel, Model 41s are radiused and Model 46s are square cut and thought that was the difference being discussed. I'm sure the gun in question had the radiused slide and not the square cut subject to cracking.

Pinduck,

I believe Tom has posted somewhere else that early 46s came with plastic grips and later they got wood grips. Also, I think it was possible to upgrade and order wood on even the earlier models from what some folks have posted. R,

I was looking at a 645 there last week. Too bad their prices are so high...they will usually haggle, I've only been able to get them down about 10% though.

Just for reference; since I'm totally "Gun Poor" right at the moment is the fact that Model 41 barrel assemblies will fit the Model 46 but not the other way around unless the "Bolt/Slide Assembly" is also used because the front rails are different. The front of the rails on the Model 46 are 'shorter' from top to bottom. The Model 41 has the Top portion of this area of the Slide Rails rounded.

I have had that pistol on my mind for a few weeks since another member eyeballed it.

Erich, I would be interested!
