I watched that one as well....$3,500+/- when considering taxes, fees, etc. What would you rate the condition on that one? The case was relined.

Yeah… but that’s a first year S prefix.
Not that I have been doing this very long at all, but it seems to me that any first year gun in top-notch condition is gonna fetch a premium.
Those cokes are going to add at least another $600 bucks to the value.

How can you tell from the pictures that the case was reclined?
I have always liked the 41. They shoot good. Throats are always consistant. You can load a nice target load or a heavy load. I have -1 one and will be getting a no dash here soon. GB its all about how bad you or the other person wants it. Some its all about the chase hence prices. I shoot all my stuff. I dont care about boxes tool kits just the gun. I know there are some that thats what they like and are after and thats fine each shooter collector has their own likes. I think maybe the 10mm craze mite have brought some attention back to the middle magnum. Love to see a 41 mountin gun made again or a L frame 4in .41.
Yep, I missed that in the description. It doesn't look relined to me from the pictures. The first year cases used a blue velvet interior.

Looks like a first year 57 with the correct case with the velour blue lining to me. Here's another for comparison. A little more in total than I'd expect to pay for one although it is the harder to find 4 inch.
That was a reasonable question....before making the "shill" statement did you check and
see what the high bidder and the second highest bidder have purchased in the last year ?

I cannot remember seeing that high of a price on a Model 57, despite age, complete package, etc. That's getting into 4 screw .44 Magnum territory.

So I have a 1st year model 57 in the box, with all the tools. It has the Cokes, and it's really pretty nice. I got it from a fellow member here (another fireman).
I would expect that they are going up like everything else. The 41's are becoming more of a hot item as well.
For a 1st year 44 magnum you can expect 4500 or more in similar condition with the box and tools.
From what I have seen lately a 1st year (1956) 4" barrel, 5 screw .44 Magnums will go over $6,500 with box and tools. The last one I saw on Gunbroker went for $6,300+, if including taxes, fees, etc. that one was over $7,000 and I rated it at 95% or less...
I think a four (4) screw, pre 29 with a 4" barrel, in very high condition with case and tools will break $4,500....the 4" barreled pre 29s are not seen for sale very often....

Look closely at the end of barrel wear and forcing cone....the use of lighting obscures the end of barrel wear...

You are dead on. 29-2's are in the $1400 - $1800 range, complete in the case and perfect. There are a lot more of them.

I'm with you guys, the lining looked 100% correct to me in every way. It's possible the seller assumed since it was velour and different than the satin and other linings they are familiar with, they just assumed it was relined. When you have a gun that looks that new, especially with the tough foam they used on those first year cases, it would be difficult to wear out the fabric.
It would not be the first incorrect description on Gun Broker
I think somebody wanted a 4 inch. There are definitely fewer, just like the 44 Magnums.

They've been creeping up there. The first year are hard to find and expensive when you do find them. I just picked up one and found out it shipped April 1964 - that was a lovely surprise.
I got this one last year. At this point, it is my only Smith with cokes..

Those are really nice looking cokes too. They used premium wood on these first year Model 57 cokes. You can really see the difference. It's funny how Smith and Wesson really put in a fine effort on this model the first year. I have some that shipped in early 1965 and they changed the interior to a satin but the guns were still A+++.
It's been sold. You obviously didn't read the specifics regarding the provenance of the gun, especially the grips.

Having just paid $4400 for a first year 6.5 pre-29 with box and tools I can agree with that.

While I don't have a first year gun I do have a M57ND and a M29-2 both are 4 inch guns. I really like both of them and enjoy shooting them. My one regret is selling a M57ND 4 inch nickel with the case and accessories a few years ago.
