Howdy All,

I just acquired a model 58, no dash, revolver and need some help dating it.

In the crane are the following numbers, last three numbers replaced with X for security reasons. There is no letter prior to the numbers.

22XXX

Anybody have any idea when this revolver was made?

Thank you.

For some reason I always thought the serial number was located in the crane.
I found it, I think, late 1964 to early 1965.

On later model revolvers, the serial number IS stamped on the frame, behind the yoke. "Crane" is one of those nasty Colt terms. :D

Your yoke numbers are assembly / internal factory numbers that mean nothing after the gun is assembled.
I'll remember that, thank you.
Thank you also to Muley Gil. All these years I've been using the yoke numbers as the serial number. Oops.

That is a fairly sought after Gun,Does it have the original Diamond Magna Stocks with the rounded bottom?

I was thinking the same thing but figured it didn't based on the fact that there was question on the SN. Call me crazy but if the butt was visible I would hope that the biggest stamped number on the gun would have been reported. Maybe, maybe not.

This is what came with it but I think the previous owner pulled them off a model 28.

Those are not correct for a model 58. Those are magna stocks, pretty much all of the standard model 58's came with diamond PC magnas (with rounded bottom edges). The diamond was eliminated in 68/69 IIRC.

Your gun is fairly early in the production of model 58's and it is a desirable gun.

Please post some photos....we all like pics you know ;)

It is a very early production gun, probably shipped in early 1965.

Colts and other guns have the SN in the crane/yoke recess, and S & W revolvers with original Target or rubber stocks that cover the bottom of the grip frame will 'usually' have it stamped there but not always. A model 58 would not due to the service (Magna) stocks.

I'm thinking of having this one ceracoated as I'm planning on using it as a bear country back up gun.

It looks like it has seen a lot of love over the the years. With some hardcast SWC loads moving along at 1300 FPS it ought to do the job.

You can check out the 58 club page and see some of the pet loads that the members have worked up. Superman has some dandy ones worked up.

Personally I would wax and preserve the original finish and exercise care after having it outdoors, but your call.

If you didn't personally assemble (what appear to be) the reloads in your photo, or can't determine the loading data, be very wary of using them. Plenty of "kaboom" threads from known or presumed overloads here :(.
