Any idea what these markings are from or what they mean? It's a shot in the dark....

Definitely proof marks, these are required for guns in many foreign nations. You buy the gun and then the govt gets it, they test it, they stamp it (often frame, slide and barrel) if it passes and then you get to own it.

There are folks who can identify specifically who may have placed these marks. I am not that guy.

Typically when you have an American made gun here in the USA and it has proofmarks like you've shown, that means it has been re-imported and you should usually be able to find evidence of that also. Likely will have the name of the importer and the city/state where they are located. This should be stamped on the frame.

Some firearms have returned to the U.S. that were purchased by military personnel stationed in other countries. These would not have import marks on them.
Some would have been purchased at a PX on base. I don't know if those would have been stamped with the host country proof marks or not.

I bought a couple of firearms at a rod & gun club in West Germany, and they do have the German proof marks, and
no import marks.

I believe those are Spanish proof marks. I have a couple of Spanish made Star pistols with similar proof marks.

The left mark means that the gun was accepted by the Eibar proof house. The right mark means that the gun passed the proof. A.2 is the date code for the proof which is 1981. There is also a flaming bomb stamp on the chamber which means that it passed. Your gun vacationed in Spain.
