Hi, just picked up a super clean Model 5946. One side stamped with the Memphis PD logo with MPD6861.
The opposite side has MPD0700/MOD5946.
Looking for some info/history.
If this is posted in the wrong area, please advise...
Thanks

Your serial number is MPD0700 - the MPD6861 would be a Memphis Police Department inventory control or possibly an Officer Assignment tracking number.

There are a number of different SW 3rd generation models (all DAO) within the MPD s/n grouping - yours makes the 3rd 5946 in the MPD0700-MPD1677 range with the additional MPD number on the right.

Additionally there is a 3953 MPD2438, 4x 4043 MPD5038-MPD6830, and a 4046 MPD7943.

Based on S/N range it would appear that either there was an evolution from 9mm to 40SW or there were choices available within the SW models.

The Inventory control numbers on the right frequently are match marked barrel, slide, and frame to allow reassembly if armorers had multiple pistols disassembled. But the MPD are the only ones I have seen with same prefix but different numbers.

The 5946 are the only ones I have seen with the second MPD number on the right - presumably the 2 different MPD numbers were confusing. So I would argue for evolution 9mm to 40SW.
