Model 60 & 60LS Question

I have a 2" revolver marked as a 60-7 Ladysmith. I was reading in the Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson and am confused. There is a heading for the Model 60: The .38 Chief's Special Stainless and another for the Model 60LS: The .38 Ladysmith Stainless. Both show a 60-7 in the Production Changes. Since mine has 60 and not 60LS is it safe to assume that it is a Model 60?

It might be me, but your first and last sentences seem to contradict each other.

Does it say Lady Smith on the side plate?

If yes, it's a Lady Smith, which is the same as a 60LS.

The stamp on the frame in the yoke cut should say 60-7.

The stamp on the frame is stamped 60-7. The Standard Catalog of S&W has a 60-6 in the Model 60 Chief's section as the Ladysmith version introduced. The 60-7 in the Chief's section says New sight, heat treat package. Then there is a Model 60LS Ladysmith section. There is talks about a 60-6 as the changes of the 3" barrel discontinued, & Rosewood Laminate grips and a 60-7 change extractor. So I guess what I am asking is are both the 60 Chief's and the 60LS Ladysmith marked just as Model 60's on the frame?

All I can guess is you're looking at the 3rd Edition or older version of the SCSW. I have the 4th Ed., and it doesn't have a separate section for the 60LS.

All Model 60s are stamped "MOD. 60" -- the ones with dashes: 60-1, 60-6, 60-7, etc., include the dash number as yours has. None of them are stamped 60LS -- that seems to be just a heading in the book.

The first Model 60 Lady Smith was a Model 60-3. It could be had with 2" or 3" barrels. I've never seen a 60-6, but supposedly they were made. The 60-7 and 60-9 both come as Lady Smiths, too. Then the newer models with the internal lock (e.g., 60-14) come as Lady Smiths, too, but I know nothing about them.

I have a Standard Catalog Of S&W 2nd Edition. So they are all 60's. Now that brings another question up (actually from another thread). Does the 60-7 Ladysmith have the heat treated package that the 60-7 Chie's has?

Yes.

The Engineering Change was for the Model 60-7 -- all of them.

No, the 60-4 was roughly the stainless equivalent of the 36-6, except the 60-4 has a target hammer and its combat trigger is serrated.

As I said earlier, the first stainless Lady Smith was the 60-3. See the photo for the 3" version. The 2" 60-3 Lady Smith wears smooth laminated rosewood stocks.
