Is it safe to carry +P's in a no-dash 60? I won't be using anything but regular .38spl for practice, but want to carry my Gold Dot +P's in it.

They're tough little guns. The general rule is any steel frame gun with a model number is safe for +P ammo. I think the M60 qualifies. They're fine little guns and I like them. I wouldn't hesitate for an instant to shoot +P ammo in them. I find them, as other J frame guns, more pleasant with target velocity ammo.

not super up on anything as new as a mod 60 (or anything else with a #) but as far as i know they are chambered for 357 magnums. so 38+p shoudn't be a prob.

Only relatively recent Model 60s are in .357, early production, including a no dash, are in .38 Special.
You can of course contact S&W for their opinion, but they seem to have told different people different things at different times.
I've certainly used +P in Model 36 revolvers, including an old flat latch, without incident.

I picked up a NIB Mod.60 "no dash" a few years ago. I also had the same question. I contacted S&W and they said yes +P was ok to shoot. You should also contact them and ask, just to ease your mind. Great little gun.

Jeff Cooper used some vicious handloads in his, and they were surely over normal Plus P limits.
You can do it, but wear will be accelerated if you shoot Plus P lot.
The factory told me that any M-60 marked M-60-4 or later suffix is warranted for use with Plus P. Before that, you can fire them, but wear will show sooner. The difference is
improved metallurgy, especially on heat treating, over older guns.
If the gun is in excellent condition and you will fire just occasional familiarity rounds and carry for defense or field use, you probably don't have much to worry about. Just do most practice with standard speed ammo.
How soon will increased wear show? No one seems to know, and it depends on the exact ammo, whether you shoot a lot in fast DA fire (which increases wear) and other factors.

I think what you're asking is if the gun will explode. The answer is no. If you're just going to carry +P's for conceal carry, the chances of you ever firing it are remote so it's almost a mute point. Using range ammo .38's for practice and fun is the smart and economical way to go. Your gun will thank you many times over.

I contacted S&W a couple of years ago with the same question. The answer was that the Mod 60 no dash would be just fine with .38 spl +p.
