My thought is that really sucks.

I would expect it would cost you $600 or so to replace it and I would be surprised if your insurance company covers a firearm stolen from a vehicle. Good Luck!

1. File a police report. Was the car dusted for fingerprints?

2. Put a lost/stolen ad in the "want ads" of the local newspaper. Offer a reward. Publicize the serial number.

3. Put a "want to buy" ad in both local and regional newspapers for a S&W Model 60 revolver, and see what happens.

File a police report.
Last week I had a Ruger Blackhawk returned to me, it was stolen in 1995, 20 years ago. A pawn shop in Arizona ( it was stolen in Baton Rouge , Louisiana) ran the serial number, it came up as stolen , the police were called and it was returned to me. Since I had never filed a claim with insurance co. it still belonged to me. Every year they called to validate theft and would tell me to report any change of address or phone number .
If it's recovered and on the list you will get it back.....don't give up hope, it can happen.
My son also had a stolen gun recovered and returned , a 9mm Beretta.

Sorry about your loss, hope it comes back home.

That makes me sick, especially after reading your original thread about your father giving it to you. Hopefully it will make its way back to you.

Report it stolen!

Good guy has gun stolen from car. Good guy reports it to police. Good guys wearing blue catch bad guy with gun. Stolen Gun hit comes up on NCIC. Good guy gets gun back. The End

police report was filed and I made a few calls around to gun stores.

opinion of value for insurance claim? Was parked in driveway so homeowners insurance is covering some after deductible.(other items stolen)

was thinking around $700

I just bought a ANIB Model 60 with original box and papers for $500. This was from a friend, so may not reflect market or gun show prices.

That reminds me of a funny story.

Years ago, I got a letter in the mail from the sheriff's department. My heart skipped a few beats. Visions of a prison cell filled my head. But it turns out that they were only writing to me to tell me that they were holding a gun (a .357 magnum revolver) in their property room and that it was mine, if I wanted it. Of course I wanted it! Someone found the gun (I had sold it years before) and I was the last listed/registered owner. :)

I had a friend many years ago had a Colt SAA (engraved) stolen and about 12 years later it was recovered when it was attempted to be traded in at a gun store. Since my friend had collected over $2000 from the insurance company, he had to reimburse the insurance company to get the gun back.

I would also suggest checking with local pawn shops for your 60. Did you knock on any neighbors doors to see if they saw anything suspicious?

Good luck in your hunt. I sincerely hope it shows up.

Your misfortune is exactly why I'm shopping for a modern, striker fire semi. The guns I currently cc or haul around in my truck are becoming scarce to find and expensive to replace. And replacing a polymer striker simply means a trip to my LGS.

Sorry jframejoey. You missed a couple steps from the good ole days. Good guys in blue are driving to the jail with bad guy. Phantom dog jumps out in front of police car causing good guy in blue to stand on the brakes. Bad guy bounces his face off the cage. This could happen several times on the way to jail. Those darn phantom dogs can come out of nowhere.

Here's another suggestion

Craigslist seems to be a favorite for thieves to fence their ill-gotten gains.

Well I hope you get it back. I would never keep a gun in a vehicle, too much can go wrong. If something bad happens with "your" gun now, someone may be paying a visit. Price $400.

I regularly keep a handgun in my truck but padlocked/chained to seat frame. Not going anywhere without me. Also, all "working" guns have no sentimental value. They are tools. If lost, stolen or damaged I'm angry but not heartbroken.

Having guns stolen is the worst feeling. I had 23 stolen in 1985 (including a 3.5" 27-2, a 6.5" 29-2, Diamondback, Python, others). So far 4 have been returned. My Series '70 45 came back after a couple months recovered in a traffic stop from a felon on parole. The AR15 a few months after that, recovered from the home a known drug dealer who showed it off and bragged about it to too many people who were trading info to police. My 375 double rifle was offered to an off duty cop at a show for $200 and he knew that wasn't right and called in the serial. Last one to come back was an HK 91 recovered by LAPD 18 years after burglary. Not holding my breath on any others, but you never know.

I do wish you luck in recovering your gun. It can happen.

Had a bunch of guns stolen in the '70's. One was a Python I paid $90 for. Other was a customized Springfield '06 I built myself. Another my Grandfather's Iver Johnson pistol. All irreplaceable for cost and history. It still haunts me to this day. I made the mistake of having them in a gun rack on the wall that was visible through a window. Live and learn. Sorry for your losses.
