Hi Folks,

I am looking to buy a couple of revolvers. I have got it narrowed down to a Colt Cobra and a King Cobra Target or a Smith and Wesson Model 60 PC and a Model 66 with 4in barrel. I am going to go to a gun show to try and handle all of them to see what fits best. But does anybody have experience with any of these revolvers and the pros and cons of Colt vs S&W?

I have read good reviews about the King Cobra target.
The Smith M 66 classic may have the barrel sheath set up versus a one piece barrel.
A vintage M 66 is a joy to shoot!

I own the KC Target and a 2.5” 66-2. Obviously the 2.5” is a shorter barrel but as to action and quality I’d say it’s close between the two. Between the new Smiths and the New Colt I’d take the Colt.

No experience between the M60 but do have a 2” Cobra that has the same smooth action and build quality as the King Cobra Target.

If you are looking to buy new, just be aware of the facts. As of lately S&W has had many QC issues, poor manufacturing ethics, bad finishes, bad mechanical issues and less than satisfactory customer service.

Good examples of most S&W revolvers are still available on the used market however since they are older guns, used and rely on others to care for them, an experienced person inspecting a potential purchase is absolutely essential!

Colt has stepped up to the plate a few years ago and their current line up, quality, fit, finish and production ethics have really shinned. There new production guns are excellent!

This is just how I see it and although own more vintage Smith Revolvers than all others combined, they were purchased a long time ago and do not fall into the modern production category. I truly wish this was not my answer to your question and I could sing praises, but it is what it is. While it pains me to say this, I do want you to enjoy your new revolver and not have to suffer through it. S&W is as we speak moving to their new headquarters in TN. I SINCERELY HOPE things drastically improve with their move, but for new production I would steer you to Colt right this minute.

NOTE: I am not being vindictive, bitter or mad, I am just honestly stating what the situation has been for some time now. You did ask.......

I live just 30 minutes from the new Smith factory and it’s my understanding revolvers will not be made here at least for now.

I don’t know that the quality of new Smiths is so bad, I just don’t care for some of the design changes like 2 piece barrels and internal locks. Also the finish is no where as nice as Colts st the moment.

I should have wiped down my KC before photographing it.

All good choices.

What you are doing is exactly right, go handle them and see which feels best to you.

FWIW, Colts always seem to feel better in my hand; I’ll be curious to hear your results.
