Hey partner! Best I can do until kernel crittenden wakes up is to check the SCSW. Closest I can come to AAZ is AAF which shows Oct. 82. This is only a very rough approximation. The other posters will chime in after breakfast.
Getting uglier out there, John. Stay safe. Check 6.
Model 60's changed to the triple alpha numeric serial numbers in 1983 so it is somewhere after that. Prior to 1983 the serials were a R prefix with a number. The earliest 60's were in 1967 in the low 400,000 range. They continued up into the 600,000's. The R prefix serials began in mid 1969 with R1.
This is based on a M60 I saw, s/n AAZ17XX, that shipped on ……… Feb 14, 1983. Your gun likely shipped very near this, but it's possible it shipped plus/minus a couple of months. That's just the nature of S&W s/n's.
The M60 I saw was in new style one-piece box that had the number 0600092021 on the label.
0600 means: Model 60 no dash.
09 means: stainless.
20 means: 2-inch barrel.
21 means: ????
I think it might be the final inspector's ID number, but I'm really not sure. Anyone know what these last two digits stood for?
Thanks for the really prompt and informative responses. I've always carried a Model 37 Airweight on my ankle that I bought when I graduated from the academy in 1984. I was looking for some new grips the other day at a local shop when I saw the Model 60 in the used case for $330 in excellent condition. Funny thing is that the owner, who caters to more of a "tactical crowd" immediately dropped the price to $300 when I asked to see it, saying that no one even looks at revolvers and he would love to get rid of it. I gave it a pretty good once over and walked out of the door with the gun, a leather IWB and a leather range bag that were included with the gun for $300 even.
Thanks again for the info. It's greatly appreciated.
Great score, partner, right time, right place. N'Orlins is a humid area, isn't it? You'll still have to wipe down that 60 if you carry it. Rust resistant, not rust proof. No dish towels here in the desert! That IWB (my favorite carry) will come in handy. Stay safe.
