I have a model 610 revolver. Those of you familiar with this model know it uses full moon clips and can fire either .40 S&W or 10mm.

Last trip to the range, it misfired an average of 1-2 rounds per load. Sometimes a second trigger pull on the misfired round would get it off, other times not. I was using factory ammunition in .40 S&W.

Eventually, all rounds were fired, so it wasn't the ammo. I have about 36 moon clips and all seem to be in plenty good shape. I clean thoroughly after every range visit. Usually fire either 50 or 100 rounds at a time.

The gun has 1,000 rounds through it, in about 15 months. I love it, but really need ideas on why the misfires.

I'm suspecting the hammer and/or trigger needs some type of adjustment, but look for your suggestions.

Thanks.

Is there crud inside the action? In the firing pin channel? Firing pin chipped? Firing pin spring OK?
Are the springs stock, or have they been "improved?"

We had one IDPA shooter who messed with his 610 for a year and finally sold it cheap after another match with many misfires.

The new owner installed a full set of "normal" Wolff springs and shot it at the next IDPA match --zero misfires.

Check to see if the strain screw has backed out, or has been backed out. That's always the first place to look on a S&W revolver that starts having misfires.

Hope this helps.

As mentioned earlier, first thing to check is the strain screw, it is located under the grips at the lower front portion of the frame. If it has unscrewed itself screwing it back in should eliminate your problems. It the gun still will not fire 100% of the time it is possible the main spring needs to be replaced and or a new strain screw as well.

I was having the same problem with my 610. I added the C&S long firing pin. Also I noticed with my gun the hammer was showing signs that it was striking and rubbing the frame on the very top left corner before it reached the firing pin. I don't know if that was a problem but I honed down the hammer around that area. I may have removed some heat treating, but it appears to be ok after several thousand rounds through it. Maybe I should have shimmed it over a little, but at the time honeing it off felt like the thing to do. I don't know which fix worked because I did both at the same time. I hope this helps.

I replaced the factory firing pin with an Apex Tactical or Cylinder & Slide extra length firing pin. I also use Federal primers which are easier to ignite.

Strain Screw

Took it to the Store/Range today and had one of the guys that is a revolver expert look at it. He tightened the strain screw 2 turns. It had backed itself out. (I didn't know what it was called until someone mentioned it earlier.) He showed me how to do it myself in the event I start to have misfires.

Fired 2 moonclips and 12 shots--perfect.

Problem solved.

I really, really love this revolver.
