Model 617 combat stocks question

Saw a 617 ND with wood combats, which look to be correct, except, upon closer inspection, the grips almost look like laminate. Did S&W use laminated stocks before switching to synthetic?

If not wood someone switched most likely.

That's what I was thinking, but SCSW #4 has a picture of a 4" 617 with combats that look suspiciously like laminated wood.
