I aquired a 627-2, 5" round butt, unfluted cylinder, 6 shot, gold bead front site, MIM frame. Serial CCU23XX. Smooth trigger. Has Hoguefinger grove grips w/S&W medallion. The barrel is LAZER ETCHED in Cursive, on left side, Smith & Wesson, Right side 357 Magnum. Product code, 148327. The SCSW states quanities unknown- 15 to 300 may be neither?
Does anyone know anything about these regarding actual quanity produced and appox value. I have been following the forum and have not seen any other posts for a 627-2. Any assitance is appreicated. Thanks Rom

Rom,

I own the 627-2 that is pictured on page 255 of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. When I corresponded with Jim Supica about the gun when he was assembling information for the 3rd edition of the SCSW, he had never heard of that variation before. My gun is exactly as the same as you have described your's and carries the same product code. The box label on mine states SB for square butt, but the gun is actually a round butt.

No much information exists on these and some of it seems to contradict itself. The most believeable, yet unconfirmed report that I have heard on these is that they were a limited run that was basically assembled from spare parts. The other rumor is that they were a run of 200 guns for export through Wiesco (sp?) who was Smith & Wesson's distibutor for Europe. I still haven't sent for a factory letter on mine, it's one of those things that I keep meaning to do but keep forgetting about.

As far as mine, I bought it as new old stock in 2005 for around $600-$650. It was from a dealer who recently moved his shop from southern California and he had several new old stock Smith & Wessons that he was unable to sell in California because they were not on the DOJ approved list. I have no idea how long he had it prior to sale and his shop has since been closed down by the ATF.

I don't know if this helps or not. If you're able to find out anything else, please let me know.

2000Z-71,

Your guys' 627-2s are news to me. They sound pretty rare. I'm guessing you have researched all the other 6 shot 627s as well and hoping you can answer a question. Did S&W make fluted 6 shot 627s? The SCSW has a picture of 3 revolvers with a caption saying they are 627s and one of them is a fluted 6 shooter. Is the fluted one actually a 627 or is it misidentified?

I have seen three 627-2, 5", fluted cylinder guns for sale. Total! They were either sold or I was outbid on them. I really would like to have one. Searching for one of them has led me to buy two 627-2 6" guns with unfluted cylinder and two Performance Center 5" slab sided guns, and three 627-0 5 1/2 inch barrel guns to put some salve on the inability to find one of 5" -2's. The search continues! Congratulations on a fine catch.

I have one of the 5 inch, unfluted 6 shot Model 627-2's. I bought mine new in 1999. S/N CCU23XX. Round butt, came with Hogue finger groove rubber grips. I don't think they are too common.

My notes show it came in the blue plastic box with cable trigger lock, but it's put away in a zippered gun rug. I am not sure where the box is.

I can attest to the fact that the fluted 627 that appears in the SCSW is indeed a 627, it's mine.

I'm envious! Unfluted cylinders never made any sense to me and they don't look attractive either. I have a few, but only on revolvers that weren't available fluted at the time I bought them.

Thanks for the great pictures.:)

627-2 5"

Thanks for the replies, mine has the non fluted cylinder. Based on the replies it would appear to be a rather uncommon varitation. Parts clean up is very possible. I like it, little heavy but quite nice to shoot. Rom

Rom,

Interesting that our guns have the same product code but yours has an unfluted cylinder and mine has the fluted. Makes the parts gun assembly story seem even more plausible.

I also have one of the 5" 627-2's. Mine has an unfluted cylinder and the product code is 148218. I bought mine a few years ago NIB from a collector that was selling off his collection. I had also heard that it was part of a small run that S&W made from spare parts. It's a great looking gun.

627-2

I wished I would have looked at this earlier but. I have a 627-2 unfluted 6 shot hogue grips from the factory with a gold bead on the front site. I bought mine new in 1999. In michigan I was told that these were a spare parts gun and only 50 were made. Idk if this helps

My favorite pawn shop has a fluted six-shot 627. I've been scouring the net to find anything about it. It has a 4" bbl. They want 1500 for it. Should buy it?

It has the cursive writing and gold bead front sight with Hogue grips. They screw on from the bottom. Is this normal and would this be a round-butt revolver?

It sounds to be one of the "gun of the month" 627-2s from about 1998. If it is in nice condition it is probably worth $1500. Please post the photos after you take it home. :)

I just might (take it home, that is), but I put another Smith on layaway. A 4006. I think these pieces came from a single person. I already have a 66-1 on layaway. I'm sure from the same person that owned them. All his guns are in great shape.
