were there different variants of the 629-4 with a 3" barrel? Also, is there a web site that describes the different models.

629-4 Variants - SWSC

Yes, there are several variants of the 629-4 in 3" barrel. The best source is the Smith & Wesson Standard Catalog, imo. Here is an unfluted FL variation, which I had polished. I've had a few of the backpackers (fluted with 3/4 lug barrels). There is the very rare 629-4 "The Avenger" quad port, listed in the P.C. section, etc.
