I am looking for any information in regards to a model 63, stainless, 4" barrel, adjustable sights, 32 mag.
I don't have the serial number as it is in a pawn shop and I'm thinking of buying it. I would just like more information as I have never seen one of these before.
Thanks

I don't know anything about the gun but I know it is not made by S&W anymore. You say .32 mag, is that a .327 Federal Magnum or .32 S&W Long or .32 H&R Magnum? Ruger is making a 4" model SP101 in .327 Fed Mag. again, with the MSRP of $769. Street price lower of course, I have seen them under $500. I like the cartridge. What is the asking price?

I saw on an old forum that on page 261 of the standard catalog that only 40 of these were made?
Could that be true?
The asking price is $625, the revolver is in excellent shape.

That is what all the research I've seen says, that the 63 was always 22lr.
This one however is not, I thought it could be a 631 mis-marked but the stamped model on this one is 63.
Could anyone look up what is says on page 261 of the S&W standard catalog?
That might clear things up a bit.
Thanks for all the help!

Your description would make it a 631. Don't know why it is stamped 63. Checking page 261 shows that there were two production runs of the 4" adjustable sighted versions. First around 1990, with a little under 5500 total and this includes 2" fixed sighted and 4" adjustable sight versions. These had smooth triggers.
Product code for the 4" is 103662.
A "special production" of 40 4" adjustable sight models with serrated triggers was made in 1998.
Product code 103682.

Here a pic of my 631.

It too was listed as a model 63, 63-1 to be exact, when I found it. But it is correctly stamped 631. It is the earlier , smooth trigger version.

If the one you are looking at is a true 631, I think that price is very low, regardless of the product code or barrel length. Most of the 631s I've seen are actually selling for well over $1200.

Should be 631 or possibly 632 as mentioned above. Check for a light stamp on the "1." Either way, for $625 you should already own it; easily worth $1k, likely more. Here's my 631 which I also bought marked as a 63 several years ago at a Bass Pro store. It was clearly stamped as a 631 but I guess no one at that store had seen one before and didn't pay attention to the bigger hole in the barrel. Great little gun, as close to a 32 "kit gun" as you can find. Enjoy.

Thanks to everyone with all your information.
I just bought it so when I get home I'll research the serial number.
It came with a presentation wood box but I cannot confirm that was from the factory.
On the yoke it is stamped 63 with a 4 above it.

There is no "1" anywhere, it is like the 631 that John sent above.
Thanks again to everyone

What you have described is a model 631. The combination of stainless steel, 4" barrel, and 32 mag can only be a model 631. The 632 is the Centenial concealed hammer version with 2" or 3" barrel. The 632-1 is the 327 magnum with a ported 3" barrel. Mismarked model numbers are not uncommon at S&W. It should have the combat stocks like the ones in TIMETRIPPER's photo.
S&W refused to mark their products with a competitors name, so the 32 H&R Magnum became the 32 Mag!
Congratulations! You have a sweet pistol for half price!

WHERE ARE THE PICTURES!

You have found a very outstanding gun for half the cost of what it would sell for. The 32 H&R Mag is a wonderful round, very accurate and very versatile. My handloads with the Hornady 100 gr. XTP chrono at just over 1200 fps from a 6" 16-4. If you would ever wish to part with this you will have no trouble finding buyers. My present carry gun is a 431PD (Airweight 2" 32 H7R mag).

The gun is a Model 631, not a 63. Someone mis-read it or it may be mis-marked. were limited production in 1990. Some were sold marked as a "Kit Gun", since they are virtually identical to the stainless ."22-.32 Kit Gun". Time Trippers photo is what you saw.

If it is less that $800, buy it! I have seen them go over $1,000.

Update, after cleaning the revolver and getting a magnifier to see the model number, it is a 631. The "1" was right on the edge of the yoke, that's why it was so hard to see. The box is definitely not from the factory as it looks like a 4 5/8" Blackhawk would fit in it but that is just a guess.
The 631 is in excellent shape, it has been shot but the bore looks great. It came with Pachmayer grips so I will be looking for some original grips.
I would appreciate any advise on where to find some original grips for this revolver. Also are there leather holsters available?
Again, thanks for all the information you guys offered, this will be a fun gun to carry in the field.

It's a great "field gun" - IMO one of the best. I use a lined Bianchi number 1 that is as old as the hills but suits me nonetheless.

You can snoop around here and the various auction sites for J frame combat stocks but they are nothing to brag about. This gun should have been made on a square-butt frame and then no special stocks would have been needed. Since it wasn't, you might consider a good Jordan Trooper style. I think Herretts still makes them and you can/could special order fancy wood if you desire.

Good luck with your 631. You've found a dandy! ;)

RWC4570,

You just got one of the only S&Ws that I still truly lust after. I have a Model 60-4 (3" underlug barrel w/adj sgts) that is the same size and wears a set of ebony smooth combats with finger grooves from Thailand (via e-Bay) that make it comfortable to carry and shoot.

Any holster for a 4 inch J frame should fit your gun. I have a Safariland and a Triple K; I forgot I had the second one when I encountered and bought the first!

The factory Combat stocks are kind of pricey. They show up occasionally on this site's marketplace section. Any round butt J frame stocks you can find will work.

Congrats on your find.

Thanks for all the tips.
I knee I had joined the right forum judging by all the great replies.
I found a Bianchi Outdoorsman holster that will do just fine. I can't wait to take this beaut to the range and ultimately be my companion in my many field miles come this fall.
