As an owner of a 639 since the early 90's, I was handling a used model 639 which had a tag, "magazine:9+1" I asked the salesman if it were a mistake, he said no. I told him I've never seen a 639 mag that held more than 8. He opened a box of 9mm reloads and proceeded to push 9 rounds into it and slid it into the 639 and smiled. Question 639 owners, what mag is this and where can I get a few? It is a S&W mag, but it surely must be from another model that happens to function in the place of normal 8-round 639 mags.

Those are the currently made 39-Series magazines - Link

I would expect those to stick out of the grip a little in a 39 or 639, though.

You can get them from Midway, CDNN or Natchez for less than they sell at S&W.

Any older 39XX series single stack 8 rounder can be turned into a 9 rounder with a new style follower and spring,
I've converted all mine.

Where do I get my hooks on this new style follower and spring?

Probably be the spring/follower assembly for the 9-round Model 39 magazine, but I'll try S&W customer service to be sure.

Sounds like the new followers and springs will make my 3913 even sweeter. Hard to imagine

I just got a 639 mag for my M39. It is marked 9 rounds and it does stick out about 1/8 inch. Got it from Midway who also have the orange followers for $3 ea.

I found the part numbers for the springs and followers that I ordered and received from S&W 2/07.
This turns a factory 3906 8 rd. magazine into a 9 rd. magazine.
It is the same spring and follower that the 952 uses.

I have a S&W 639. It only came with 1 magazine, Is there a thread or does anyone know if magazines from any other models will work with the 639? This one has a metal base and the only markings on it is S&W stamped on the bottom.

The only replacement that S&W makes is the nine round stainless w/black plastic basepad. If you want a original medal base you'll have to find a used one most likely. I do know that the mags are on backorder status most places right now. They list them as fitting 39/x39/952/39xx series.

The link in the 2nd post above is the currently produced mag that works in the 639. The original stainless mags with the metal base are difficult to find these days.

Here are some pics of my 3906 with the 8rd and
9rd mags. The overall length is still the same.
