Model 640

It's a little heavy for any kind of pocket carry and the one clip to the waist band type holster I had made the pants sag. But that same weight makes it eat up recoil so much better than any alloy frame model. The front sight on mine is the serrated ramp, and it used to chew at that holster. I keep thinking that I should swap it out with a Big Dot or similar. I ditched the original stock that it came with and ended up with a Pachmayr Compac. It's a bit bulky but with Remington Golden Saber .357's it makes the gun very manageable. I ripped the ILS out and bought the Plug from the classifieds here. I also recently bought a BK grip adapter and put some old magnas on it to try how recoil is but have yet to range visit it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention this gun also contains the Apex spring kit. One word: amazing...

I don't like the newer Pro series, but the older 640s like Max's pictured one are great. The older .38SPL ones are even lighter and more concealable

I recently bought a 640-1 (NL) and like it. I'm over 6' and 200 pounds so cc is not a problem (with a IWB). I added Pac grips (regular) since I have large hands. Snappy with .357 ammo but with +P (I like Winchester 130 PDX 1) very manageable. I tried the 642, nice concealable gun, but the extra weight of the 640(about 8 oz) makes all the difference. Issues? The front sight, while OK for cc and 0-7 yards, doesn't work for me beyond that distance. I've ordered a CT 305 and hope that will help, but then older eyes have special needs. I hope this was of some help. Good Luck!

Yep, I have a dash-1. You won't regret getting an older one. I carry that or the SIG P6. Frankly, I prefer 5 rounds of .357 to 9 of 9mm..... H.

The only issue you need to be aware of is that it will soon become your favorite gun of all time (if you're like me). I got mine on a trade for something else and wasn't looking for anything like that. Didn't even want it really...but I took it shooting and fell in love with it. I carry it in a OWB holster (normally). It is awesome...shoots well, silky smooth trigger...just awesome. I carry .357 Magnum Speer Gold Dot Short Barrels in it, but may try some of the new .357 Magnum PDX1 by Winchester. My model is the 640-1 and it has Uncle Mike's rubber grips...Crimson Trace would be nice on one also. I also like the 642, but the triggers don't compare...the 640 is much better. Best wishes, B

I used a 640-1 for years as an off-duty carry gun. No downside other than the weight. I switched to a 442 because my new department only allows .38, not .357, so I figured I would travel a little lighter. Now the department only allows semi-autos, so I will carry off-duty under my retired status- any S&W revolver I want! (Got my retired carry qualification card last week.)
