My local Armslist has one one these SS airweights for sale and I'm not familiar enough with them to recognize a good deal. Reason for asking is that my local GS doesn't open for 3 more hours and I wanted to respond to the ad if the price seemed fair.
Here's the ad:

For sale - SW 642 - bought new, put twenty rounds through and decided this is not my thing - comes with box, new Sticky pocket holster and a new full box of Hornady self defense .38, 25 rounds.

Thank you.

If you do buy it, consider getting a Hogue grip that has the cushioned backstrap. That's probably why the original buyer returned it.

A few months ago I bought a used 442 for $300 in a private sale, it has a lock but I thought it was a good deal so I bought it anyway. New price at the local discount sporting goods place (Sportsmans Warehouse aka Wholesale Sports) is about $380 for either the 442 or 642, plus sales tax for about $415 OTD. Pocket holster & ammo is worth about $30-40 new.

They can be had new for $345 without any effort to find that price. I've seen $330 not long ago.

Proper defense ammo can be had for $25 per box and depending on the holster it could be a $10 one, new. I'd ignore both those items in the sale. All they do is hide the real cost of the firearm to you.

I wouldn't pay more than $75 off the $345 and wouldn't exactly consider that a great deal. I'd rather buy a self defense gun new if I wasn't getting it at a great price.

So $345 less $100 leaves $245. Plus $5 for used pocket holster and $20 for discounted ammo. $270.

New 642s and 442s are available from budspolicesupply.com for $325 shipped. Have to meet some requirements but I think quite a few folks can find a way to do it.

Around $300 maybe $350 with the extras would be a very good price.
Sounds like he bought it, took it to the range, found out it's difficult to shoot a dao J frame accurately and gave up instead of taking the time to practice with it.

If you research the Bud's police supply site, it turns out that some sort of "first responder" creds are required to get that price-- law enforcement, firefighter, active military, etc. There's quite a list of qualifying jobs, unfortunately none of them include me. So I'm guessing a lot of us won't qualify for that price.
Even if you do qualify, there are some other costs. Even if shipping is included, which is not always the case buying online, my local FFL charges $30 for the paperwork exercise and the state requires him to collect sales tax. Some outfits (including Bud's) charge extra for cedit card sales, you get a lower price paying with a cashier's check but that's kind of a PITA. So the total cost of buying online can often endsup being not much less than the local discount gun place.
I'd say that if the OP can get that gently used 642 for $300 or so he should go for it.
BTW I'm kind of curious why Bud's cop-shop has the (no lock!) 642 in stock at $325 (cash price BTW-credit card purchase extra) but the regular Bud's site shows it out of stock.

Just bought one this morning for 344.95. I guess I bought the last one in stock because after I checked out, it listed as temporarely out of stock.
