I just joined the forum yesterday, and I have tried using the search but no luck. Maybe I'm not doing it right, so right now I'll just ask the memebers. I would like some information on the model 648, like what years were they made, are they any good, what are they worth. I bought one from a friend a few years ago, he didn't save the box or any of the papers (whished he had). It has a six inch barrel and Smith & Wesson finger groove grips. Overall I would rated it about 95%. I don't shot this gun near enough, I should though it seems to be the most accurate revolver I have. Any help will be appreciated.

It appears to be a great gun from what I've read. I have a buddy with several Model 48's and they're fun to shoot.

Anyway, there were two separate production runs of the 648. 1989-1994, and another one 2003-2005. The 648 came out in 1989, 648-1 in 1994, and the 648-2 in 2003. The -2 was the addition of the beloved internal lock...

648

Thanks Rawhyde, I guess I'm lucky. The one I have has no dash on it, just 648. Smith and Wesson must have not made many of them, because it is rare to see one listed on any of the auctions. Thanks again.

i also have a no dash with the combat grips....great guns indeed

after looking into what people are asking and getting for their 648 and what you paid for it, I would order a new extractor complete w/ rod assembly and maybe even the crane...I would go back to just the iron sights...thats a cool gun and a great buy...

just wondering about something here...maybe give S&W a call and see if they would straighten out the gun under the lifetime warranty...I know it says you have to be the original owner but, they did repair a gun I have under that warranty and I was the second owner

my star extractor spun on the rod...they replaced the entire cylinder and extractor assembly including the crane...

That Gunbroker one was sold to my shooting buddy, then they told him that it had a problem. They were supposed to call us when it came back from S&W. Just goes to show, that you should always follow up....

I think the seller is doing the right thing by getting it fixed before sending it to the buyer. I am curious, what was the problem with it?

Since it was originally sold to my buddy, we wish they'd called us when it returned from S&W. According to the GB description, all it needed was to be cleaned up under the extractor star. .22 mags are nasty about getting unburned granules under the star and tying up the gun.

All these posts are in April 2011 - is anyone still out there about 648's? i'd like an opinion on the value of my piece...

Nicholas, I guess I will try to rejuvenate this thread too.... What did you or others learn of the current value of 648's, 6" SST, no dash, with combat (wood) grips? I stored mine again after a sale fell thru a couple years ago...
