Hello S&W experts. I need a bit of help identifying a model 65-5 and determining its current value. It is a 3 incher. It does not have "stock" grips, but aftermarket "combat style" laminated finger-groove grips. It also has the number 259 stamped on the lower, left frame, just under the cylinder.
Inside of the yoke is stamped 745. I don't know the origin of this revolver and I'm not "up" on 65's. Does anyone know if these extra numbers are from the factory and what they mean? Also, what may be the value of this piece ? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know about the extra stamped numbers, but a three inch 65-5 is a fairly desirable gun. The three inch barrel combined with a round butt frame makes for an almost perfect combination of shootability and concealability. The three inch guns allow for a full length ejector stroke to clear empties completely from the gun, and the fixed sights impart a sense of ruggedness. Stainless is also another bonus in that department. The stocks sound similar to the S&W "Combat" variety, and can be pretty valuable in and of themselves if they are factory. The 65 and it's blued or nickled counterpart, the 13, are almost carry revolver perfection in my book. With the right holster/belt combo, you will hardly notice the weight, and they just flat make great guns to have around. Keep your bullet weight above 125 grains on the Magnum load, and reliability and dependability shoud be for a lifetime. I love my nickle Model 13, and have since replaced the grips in these pics with a set of factory service magna style splinter stocks, and a high polished aluminum Tyler T grip adapter. Hold on to it; the values will just continue to rise.

Depending on where you are and the overall condition of the gun, a Model 65 would go between $400 and $600+. They are such a sought after pistol that they are seldom seen in the gun shops. It is a great concealment piece.
