My friend just bought a S&W 916 12ga 3inch from the 70's. 18inch barrel, I saw pictures it looks really nice. When did S&W make this model?

The book is vague on when these were made. I looked last night and all I found was a mention of 1972 and list prices from 1978. Not much info to go on.

I agree with brick's date range. It appears that the 916 was not produced much later than about 1980, when it was superceded by the first Model 1000 (the earlier Model 1000 was a pump; subsequent 1000's were semi-automatic - how's that for confusing?!).

Thanks for the info, looks like my friend has something nice! He bought two at a local show, I saw pictures and they look really nice!

The 916s, in the early 1970s, were the first generation of the guns produced after S&W bought the Noble gun Co. shotgun tooling & parts, and are essentially Noble's Model 66 with the S&W name on them. S&W first called these ex-Noble designed guns the "Eastfield" model 916. They had fixed barrels, in lengths from 18 in. to 30 in. and in 20, 16 & 12 ga. Original prices were $98.25 to $122.50. Later the Model 916T ( T for takedown) came out with interchangeable barrels. Your friend's 18 in. barreled Model 916 is the "Riot" version offered for Police & Military uses, and were available with, or without, an extended high capacity magazine tube. Ed.

What is a good price for a riot model 916. It has 18 inch barrel, extended tube and about 90% condition. The owner wants $280 and I like the gun. But I have read on this forum a lot of negative comments about the 916 not being able to feed and extract shells. A Remington 870 Police model in this same condition would sell for at least double this price where I live. Do you guys think this 916 is a bad investment? Thanks, Richy.

hm427donzi, Welcome to the Forum. Prices vary depending on where you live, however condition is the key to value. Is the riot model you are considering a Police turn in? If so, it may have been fired very little, but the finish is worn by handling, etc. $280 sound pretty high for a 916. If you can't get it for $200, or less, I would advise to pass. Ed.

The first firearm I filled out a 4473 for was a Smith 916 T.

I remember it as one punishing shooter. Seems like I paid around $100.00 for it. That was many moons ago.
