I recently stumbled on this revolver and since I am new to this world I am trying to decide if I need it an possibly the worth is.

This is a heavy barrel model of 1950 6.5" barrel that is marked 25-2 on the frame. I have heard of the Improper stamp on these and wondered if this was one. Are they rare?

Thank you

A mis-stamped anything doesn't add value in my mind. I'm a shooter accumulater not a diehard collector. When I stumble on a good condition rarity / desirable model at a bargain price, I buy them for trade. I've come to realize that pristine condition rare models mean a lot to the collector brotherhood and shooter grade guns are fine with me. I admit my love of good guns is still based on pulling triggers.

Last year I traded a perfect M15 in a perfect old blue cardboard box w tools for what appeared to be an as new M325 Thunder Ranch 45 ACP revolver. It looked unfired to me. Both parties walked away happy. The dealer had a hole in his personal collection. He was happy to fill it so he didn't care that dollarwise I was ahead. The 325 was the only thing on his table that made me happy. I picked up a shooter grade M67 to replace the M15 for me to have a nice but not rare 38 Special plinker.

I vaguely recall 1,000 25-2s were improperly stamped Model of 1950? Might be a small premium for one.

We would need a condition estimate for a value, but a nice 25-2 would be in the $750 range. Agree the value is probably not greatly increased with the mid-stamp, unless you find a motivated buyer looking for one.

Consider how many weren't misstamped versus how many that were.

In my mind it would be silly not to consider them at a slight premium......but then again I do love my .45acp revolvers.

While I own a correctly marked 25-2 "1955" I would live to add an incorrectly stamped "1950" marked 25-2 example as well. (If found at a price I could tolerate!)

The mistamped model of 1950 I have seen command decent premium but only when it was 98 plus condition or boxed and 98 plus percent. If you are talking shooter grade condition it will not even matter.

Even a 1-in-1000 less than 98% shooter grade example probably would matter to me. ;)

25-2

Was lurking, saw the post and thought I should jump in here briefly. I have one of those oddballs and lugged it around to a number of gunshows asking the experts about it. Heard all sorts of stories about how many were made. One guy said it was 1 of a hundred. Some guys just scratched their heads and shrugged their shoulders. Finally wrote S&W and received a very nice hand written note from Roy Jinks informing me that 1500 barrels had been incorrectly marked: "Model of 1950". The decision was made to go ahead and ship them!

Did you find out if the mis-stamped model you had is worth a premium? I also have one.

I brought my recently acquired 25-2 1955 to the range today and ran 100 rounds through it, along with my 627 Pro and my .40 BHP. I had swapped out the stock S&W targets with a pair of Culina stocks off my 4" 27-2 and what a difference the stock swap made. The Culina stocks made a great difference in how the gun handles recoil for my hand.

iowafilm, just to give you an idea of what the gun might possibly sell for, I bought mine off GunBroker a few months ago for $735 plus $30 shipping. No box, but it did come with the moonclip tool and 4 moonclips.

"1950" 25-2

Capt. I have no idea about a premium. Collectors like anomalies. A 25-2 collector would be interested I suppose. I can't imagine that it would be something S&W would be especially proud of having done. I have owned a number of 25-2s but this is the only one I've hung on to. I think that's the real value, the feeling it gives someone to own something special. Isn't that what we're all looking for? Safe travels.
