I won this Model of 1955 in an auction a week or so ago. It is in beautiful condition. Some slight frosting in the barrel, which was surprising as the rest of the gun is pristine. Serial number S 161019, which I think makes it 1956 production? It has non-relieved targets that do not match the serial number of the gun. They have seen sort of shaved down at the rear lower down, which actually makes it very comfortable. It has a target hammer and trigger, and don't know if it came that way from the factory.

I paid $910 after commission, shipping, etc. I figured that wasn't too bad, as I had sold one for $750 a couple of years ago for one not nearly so nice.

I have a pair that grips that were modified by someone in the past like yours. I completed the modification by filling the checkering with automotive bondo and then spray painted with wrinkle paint. I don't know how many of my k frames those grips have been on, I know I still have them here somewhere.

What is the model after premodel? Is that a N frame? Looks great.

The price would be very agreeable to me...The right grip looks a little odd though...The rest of the gun is outstanding!......Ben

Yes - the grips are from a close, but different number gun. The backs of the left and right grip have been sanded down and it has changed the contour. They are extremely comfortable as modified.

I am putting together a data base of serial numbers on S&W 45 ACP revolvers. I have two Model 1955s with serials close to yours,

S161190 Jun-56
S161733 Apr-59

So, you can see that serial numbers do NOT ship in order.

The only way to find when that particular number shipped is to spend the money and request a letter.

Nice catch. Even with the buyer's premium the price was right. Here is mine-the top one in the photo, also from 1956. The bottom one is model 1950 (pre-26). Both terrific shooters.
