I've been looking for a 24-3 witha 3' barrel. I found one and it appears to be in excellent shape. However, it has engraving on the frame and the cylinders identical to that on a model 17 posted for sale by "rangemaster" on page 4 or 5 of guns for sale or trade.
Does anybody know anything about this kind of engraving and what it indicates about the gun and value. Is it aftermarket or really done by S&W ................and Why?

If the engraving was to denote the revolver being presented as a retirement gift or something along those line I would be put off. But if it was tastefully done and not some scratching done with a rusty nail then I would be interested. Some folks prefer guns with the retirement engraving as they collect police marked revolvers.
