This revolver is very special to me. Not one I would normally collect (accumulate) but one I would not sell.

Dad died when I was young and mom never dated or remarried. We lived in the country with few neighbors. My sister married and I left for college leaving mom feeling a little vulnerable I'm sure.

I came home one week and she showed me her purchase. We went out back and she fired two cylinders of 38 specials through it. I cleaned it and loaded it with six more rounds of 38 special.

She was not unfamiliar with firearms and was around them her entire life but I do not think she ever fired this model 13 again. I know this goes against all doctrines of self defence (not practicing with your firearm on a regular basis etc.) but I know she felt a little more secure just knowing it was in the house and I find no fault with that.

Mom passed away in 2020 and next week is her birthday.

Feeling a little nostalgic this morning, so thanks for letting me share.

My sister and I were two of the luckiest kids in the world. We had great parents.

Well, your mom sure chose what I consider the perfect gun. Better than a target sighted 19 for her purposes. Great story.
I have a 3" 13-3 which people seem to prefer, but I kind of. Like your mom's better. As a bonus hers has recessed chambers.

Birthday idea

Well I'm thinking in honor of your mom you make a day of her birthday
Take off from work
Maybe breakfast or lunch at her favorite restaurant
then a trip to bring her flowers
then off to the range and throw a few rounds in her memory
A few cylinders won't hurt that 13 and since you'll never sell it no worries if it shows a little use

Invite family too if that's feasible

Just me .02

Thank you for your suggestion, it is an excellent one. Unfortunately it won't be possible this year because my wife has scheduled cancer surgery on the same day as my moms birthday.

Our family (daughters, sons in laws, and grandkids) have taken many trips back to Russell County, VA to visit my parents place of rest. On our next trip I might just take that model 13 along.

Good story. Your mom was a responsible person. She was responsible for you guys, and when you were gone she was responsible for her own safety too. She made a good choice with the model 13. It's a venerable weapon, and would have done the job had it been called on. My mom had an M&P before they were called model 10's. She never had to use it, but knew how.

Nice memories and revolver! My Mom had a 4" model 15 in the house until she had senior advanced dementia whereupon my older brother asked to take it and she easily obliged because she was aware of her condition...I have it now as I had given it to her a few years earlier...

My mother is the same way. She likes her revolver and shot it once years ago.

Thank you for sharing.
