Anyone tried Monarch steel case ammo? Will it damage anything? My SD9VE seems to eat anything, but I have always used brass casings.

I've had zero problems with Monarch steel cased ammo in any of my guns including my SD9VE's.

If there were a problem with steel cased ammo Hornady would not have introduced a "Match" grade series of ammo using them. (see below)

Monarch caused failures to feed in my Sigma 9. But that was years ago and I think Monarch sources from different suppliers and just puts their name on the box. Only way to know how it runs in your pistol would be to try some of their current stuff.

My favorite source for inexpensive range ammo is Freedom. They have been having sales and free shipping specials lately, that is when I stock up. My last order was < $200 for 1k rounds of reman on special and free shipping. And that is with TX sales tax added. They are in Idaho, but have a retail outlet in Houston. Link to their 9mm:

Sign up for their emails (left side of screen, scroll down) and I believe I read they have free shipping for new customers 1st order.

I qualified for my CHL with Monarch steel. It worked fine and I wasn't tempted to police my brass/steel

Couple of guys in the recent defensive pistol class I attended were using it. One of our instructors endorsed it for training / range ammo.

Local range rule:

"We do not allow steel cased ammo or steel core ammo on the range. If a magnet sticks to your ammo it will not be allowed."

Your range rules do not have anything to do with steel case ammo use in firearms. Steel core bullets can damage the backstop. Brass recycle companies will not accept range brass if it has steel cases mixed in.

While most guns will function just fine with steel case ammo, I do not recommend using it because it is usually low quality ammo.

Steel cased ammo was employed by the Germans, Russians and Americans during WWII because of shortages in strategic materials like copper (brass). It was never the preferred case material but was a wartime substitute. Armies view military weapons as expendable so steel cased ammo is not a factor for them. It is for me. Steel cases are harder than brass. Steel causes more friction than brass. Friction causes wear. Keep your steel cased ammo. I'll keep shooting brass cased ammo.

some people like it, some don't. i have used it in many different guns and never had any problems.
