My wife and I just got home yesterday from a vacation in the desert. We spent two weeks in Scottsdale, Arizona, and had a great time. My wife has family in the Phx. area, so we got to see them. Our friends who live in Florida flew over and spent a week at the same resort we were at, and we did lots of fun stuff.

The highlight of the trip was going to Monument Valley, which lies on the Utah/AZ border in the NE corner of the state. I'd only seen it in photos and the movies, and it's one of the only places left in the US that I really wanted to see that I hadn't seen before.

Here are a few of the photos I took. You can almost imagine John Wayne riding through them. Well, not the highway. That would be Peter Fonda on a chopper.

Thanks for the fine pics. I would love to see the states of Utah and Arizona as I hear they have some beautiful parks and scenery. Know I would go broke in the gift shops.

The company I work for used to have a store in Monticello, UT, and I liked to go that way when I had to go there. A person has to be wary of the Winnebagos on a windy day.

Back when I ran a flat bed, I drove all through that red rock country on back roads. I saw a lot of pretty country. Now that I'm always oversize I stay on the freeways.

Been there, done that. Been a few years. Going back this fall.

Did you visit the old trading post in the valley where Ford & Co. stayed?

Had REAL Indian tacos (made with mutton) there!

Monument Valley a must see....

It's awesome. Other places I had to see was the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest. Meteor Crater, Sedona and of course the Grand Canyon were on my list. I loved our trip all around AZ and NM.

Later, we made another 'Great Circle' of the Rockies, the Tetons, Yellowstone, Wyoming and back down to Denver.

Keep me as far from fancy resorts as possible.

Another great trip was through OK where my brother lived. Gun museums, Cowboy Hall of Fame and LOTS ot stuff.

We are heading out to Mancos, CO in July to scatter some ashes. While we are that far west, I made plans to see Capital Reef for a few days and swing through Monument Valley on the way back. I've always wanted to see the scenery that was filmed in so many western movies throughout the years.....

I didn't go into any shops. My souvenirs were all photographic. Here's a few more. That jagged peak that doesn't fit with the rest is El Capitan, just north of Kayenta:
