I'd like to try ICORE and IDPA with my S&W 986 but the price of the moon clip carriers I've seen just turn me off! I can't see $130 for a holder! I know I'm an old curmudgeon but am I just that much out of touch?
I'd like to have a carrier that holds at least 4 moons but 6 would be better. Anyone have an recommendations?

From another old curmudgeon who thought the ready made ones were too spendy.
Decided to just make some.
Its not rocket science!
Cut out kydex, heated and bent.
Drilled and attached belt clips and made some posts from aluminum rod.
Made 2 of them, each holds 4 clips.

Just like Tarowman shows work great, but if you don't want to or have the tools to do this check out revolver supply George has one and two post models available in short and tall posts.

ICORE, yes. IDPA, not with that gun. The barrel length restriction in IDPA is 4.2". In addition, if the gun is loaded using moon clips, it has to make major power factor - while it can be done, I wouldn't recommend it. And last, but not least, you can only load six rounds, which means the cylinder must be properly indexed after each reload - not exactly conducive to speed.

You are GTG with ICORE, but still putting yourself at a disadvantage against the 8-shooters.

I, too, made my own moon clip carrier because I had some clips with a center hole that was too large for the normal .5" posts. I bought two Tek-Lok fasteners and four .625" posts from Revolver supply. A piece of Kydex and some long machine screws (to secure the posts). Cut, drill, bend, screw and for less than $50 I had a workable carrier. Not the most beautiful looking, but highly functional...

Good luck with whatever you choose.

PizzaBob, thanks for all the info! I had realized from another post that IDPA was a no go with the 986.. and even in ICORE I'm at a disadvantage by one round! Shoulda bought the 929! :) Good work on your carrier, what secures the moons when you have to run?

what secures the moons when you have to run?

Thanks. The Kydex is bent at slightly more than ninety degrees so that the posts rest against the vertical back of the holder. It is flexible enough that you can bend the post forward to put the loaded clip on the post and the tension against the vertical back holds them in place.
