More morels picked this weekend

Took my oldest daughter mushroom hunting for the first time. She loved it. While it rained all day Saturday we did manage to find a few really nice white morels. But found more on Friday. With the pic also with both of daddy's girls in it. That with the 5 trout she caught this morning dinner is going to be delicious tomorrow night.

my dad used to pick mushrooms in the mountains. sorry i didn't learn to pick them. what did she, or the rest of the family catch the trout with. fly rods? bait?

We just finished cooking and eating grilled rack of lamb over fettuccine and black morels in a sage cream sauce. Mmmmm good eats.

Late this past week the first morels of the season popped here in Utah's mountains.

With the three days of drenching rain we had this weekend next week could be a good week for mushrooms.

Bearfoot, she caught all 5 with a night crawler, she was fishing a private stream and caught 2 really nice natives also. I tried to post a pic of the trout but I can't add anymore pics right now

I live on an acreage. About 100 yards behind the house we have a stand of very old trees. I'm sure there are mushrooms out there but I have no idea where to look. Where do they grow?

The wife hit one of her secret spots for black morels this afternoon with one of her girl friends. This was her half of today's collecting. Time to clean and string some for drying.

The only thing I know about mushrooms is the ones I get out of a can or jar from Wallyworld or the ones stuffed with crab meat I got from a local butcher shop today. Some of the local fried heads pick them out of cow patties and do various concoctions with them but I've never tried that nor will I. Sometimes in their state of mind they get the wrong ones and the end result is not good. After reading a few mushroom posts I've gotten curious and want to know if any of the local mushrooms might be good for something other than halucinations or ER visits. I need to do some research.

Morels are a great start mushroom for the novice. They are unique enough that they are hard to confuse. There is a toxic look alike called a false morel but they are different enough in structure that it is pretty easy to tell them apart from edible morels.

With a quick inter web search you can find the differences. The easiest thing to remember is edible morels are hollow when you cut them in half. The flash morels are kind of filled with white stuff. The other teller is the false morel has a real cap and stem (like an umbrella) the edible verities the stem comes up then turned into that kind of brain looking top.

It is a little early for the false morels here locally. If I get a chance I'll see if I can find some false morels and get some good photos to post of both.

The answer is "yes" they can be found in New York. I would think it is time to start hitting the woods. If you find any morels; keep the location of your find a closely held secret.

Yep. I'm just a couple exits west down the thruway from you. I find them in the leaf litter/weedy area at the entry to our woods. I don't find a ton, but usually come up with a couple handfuls.

I've been walking the dogs in the "morel area" everyday after work and haven't stumbled across any yet. Hopefully the warmer weather will bring them out.

They are certainly worth the time investment. Wegmans had some dried up ones for 40 bucks a pound a week or two ago. I can't pull that trigger without doin' some legwork on my own first.
