Morels are a great start mushroom for the novice. They are unique enough that they are hard to confuse. There is a toxic look alike called a false morel but they are different enough in structure that it is pretty easy to tell them apart from edible morels.
With a quick inter web search you can find the differences. The easiest thing to remember is edible morels are hollow when you cut them in half. The flash morels are kind of filled with white stuff. The other teller is the false morel has a real cap and stem (like an umbrella) the edible verities the stem comes up then turned into that kind of brain looking top.
It is a little early for the false morels here locally. If I get a chance I'll see if I can find some false morels and get some good photos to post of both.
