First thing I did on mine was install a 590A1 safety. Mine is a Cruiser Breacher. Older one that is parkerized.

Like the 500, trained with one and was impressed by them. I attended a USMC Combat Shotgun Instructor's Course in the late 1980's, the course was set up for 350 rounds of OO Buck and slugs. As folks that were going to be instructors, they had us repeat many of the drills, so I am guessing we fired about 500 rounds in those three days. That said if I was going to buy a Mossberg it would be the 590.

However, below is what I use....

I used to be a huge Ithaca Model 37 guy, but in recent years I've really come to love the Mossberg 500 Series.

Currently, I only own one example, but it was the one which held the most appeal to me, and believe it or not made the most sense for fast deployment in a Home Invasion scenario.

The Mossberg 590 Shockwave.

The first shotgun I could call all mine was a 20 gauge Mossberg 500 branded Montgomery Ward. Killed a lot of pheasants and bobwhites with it. Will always have a soft spot for the ol' 500. Nice job of making the gun useful without over doing it.

I have 2 Mossberg 500's. One is the 5 shot with a 18.5 inch Deer Slug barrel The other is an 8 shot Defender. Living in town, I'm a little long on shotguns (5 pumps, 8 O/U's, 5 SxS's, 2 semi-autos & 3 combo guns). On the other hand, a reliable shotgun is a wonderful thing to have in your hands! Two of the 20 gauges, I bought for my wife, but they fit me so well I use them often! (I set a new personal best with her Beretta 391 not that long ago: 45/50)

Nice selection of parts to make your Mossy work for you.
Mossy platform is so adaptable with many good upgrades available to customize for your purposes. Here's my 500 that I bought for short $ as a 'demo' to set up for tactical. The receiver is pre-drilled so I could easily mount a red dot.

Pretty bare bones when I had a Mossberg 500. I went to the 590 Maritime for Alaska and put rifle sights on it (Hi Viz and a peep). Sling and shell holder on the stock.

Obviously for bear! Now I have a Model 12.
