Mossberg Patriot .308 rifle

Hi Everyone!
Just bought a Mossberg Patriot synthetic stock chambered for .308....has a lot of very well thought out features on it.

Local pawn shop sold it to me for $200.00 with an inexpensive but current production Bushnell 3x9 scope on it and an Uncle Mikes sling.

Anyone here have first hand shooting experience with this rifle? The trigger is excellent.......Will have my own range report by Saturday...

I have a walnut stocked Patriot in .270 Win. It has a Vortex 3x9 scope installed. It is a beautiful rifle reminesient of the old Winchester model 70.
With Remington 130 grain Core Lok my gun shoots excellent "hunting" groups at 100 and 200 yds. Mosberg's "Lightning" trigger is excellent.
I have been pleased with my rifle and think that it represents great value for the money. No doubt you will find your 308 Patriot just as well.

They sound pretty nice from a couple reviews I read in Shooting Times late last year. Price was reasonable for a walnut stocked rifle these days. Guns we took for granted with high polish bluing and walnut many years back seem like high end arms today.

my brother and I both bought new patriot 308s with the kyrptec banshee
treatment, basically a burnt bronze cerakote metal treatment two weeks ago, and while he has yet to scope his, I bought a new Tasco world class 3x9x40 ($50) and mounted on mine and with federal 150 grain blue box its giving me 1.2 inch groups at 100, Winchester 150 grain soft points points open up to about 1.5 inch

just ordered some Remington core lock both 150 and 180 grain from academy sports for 17.99 per box I ordered 5 each so I can max out the current $5 per box rebate, 10 box limit, as well as some federal gold medal match 168/175 gr so I can test other weights.

most 308s like the heavier bullets and I bet this one will as well

it looks a lot like and competes very well with the browning hells canyon speed, at 1/4 of the price

I ordered mine direct from distributer, and it cost me $328, so I think you have done well with your 200 dollar purchase

this is my 4th current 308, savage 12vlpdbm, savage 110 fp tactical, weatherby stainless weather guard, and I am very satisfied with my cheap little mossberg

as a follow up to my last post on this issue, I got a box of 150 gr Remington core lock in and went back to our farm range Saturday

my rifle with the tasco 3x9x40


the photo below shows two groups that were shot at 100 yds from a bench in a Caldwell lead sled.

I set my hunting rifle where they shoot 1.5 inch's high at 100, so the first 3 shot group (upper) are the Remington rounds point of hold was the bulls eye mark
the lower 3 shot group were federal blue box with a 6 o'clock hold on the same 3" target

I am well satisfied with this little setup, the Tasco world class let me see deer, late that evening that I could not see with my eyes at 150 yds.

and to quote the guy on forged in fire, "IT WILL KEEL!"

Well, I got to fire this rifle over the weekend.....initially was VERY disappointed in it....very bad vertical dispersion.
Scope is a Burris Fullfield 2 3x9. Ammo used was my reloads that have a very long history of accuracy (my replication of M852 Match ammo)....

I was ready to take it back to the store or send it to Mossburg.
I checked everything I could think of....all screws were tight, barrel was not touching the stock, should be good to go.....It started to rain heavily so I went home to ponder the REAL problem...

Next morning I decided to run a rod through the barrel and see it I could feel anything unusual....nothing...

THEN I looked at the rifle and thought something just doesn't look right...it wasn't, the bottom of the objective lens of the scope was touching the top of the barrel...
NO WONDER it did perform well...I moved it slightly forward so it no longer touched...back to the range and NOW it shoots quite well...3 shot groups just under 1 MOA several times!!

The rifle was telling me that something was wrong, I just didn't notice it until I was inside with very good lighting.

PS. It DOES favor 165 bullets over 150's.........

I am still waiting on my order from academy with my different loads, but I am satisfied with where it is shooting, and in all honesty by the time I shot the group with the federal ammo I had the sun quartering into my eyes and I made that last shot one handed from the bench with my left hand holding my cap between my eyes and the sun

but for a budget gun I am super happy with my purchase I have $1300 target rifles that don't shoot that much better

I gave up reloading long ago I just don't have the time, so I find what my guns like and buy it by the case, and it takes me a pretty good while to shoot through 200 rds
