Ive been looking at these for awhile and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were. If you have one, tell me about it. Don't know differences between guages etc. either. All information is appreciated...

I installed one on my own Mossberg shotgun and shot a box of 00 buck through it.........................promptly put the synthetic buttstock back on as it was too hard to control.

I had a buddy who was a police officer and installed one of those on his Mossberg 500 (police issued) shotgun. He practiced with it until he got very good on static targets. He then upped his game by having his dad stand behind a small hill (for cover) and throw clay birds for him until he could break them regularly. He upped his game even further by having his dad (still behind the hill) throw the clay birds directly at him. By the time he could break those clay birds, he had wrecked his hands and wrists and could no longer shoot the pistol gripped Mossberg (he had used #4 Buckshot through all of his practice sessions). I think a pistol gripped shotgun gets high marks for portability, "coolness", and compactness, but I wouldn't want to shoot one on any kind of regular basis.

Good luck,

Dave

I have one on a 12 gage Maveric 88 (Mossberg economy line) in 18 1/2" (5+1) that I absolutely love. I had one on a Mossberg 500 20" barrel (7+1) and found it a little nose heavy for my tastes, but still ok. I went back to a rifle stock on the 20 inch Mossberg. The grip I use is hard plastic and I can feel the kick. There are after market softer hand grips that can be had for about $30 that I think would greatly improve the felt recoil.

I use mine for home defense but it would be a great gun in a vehicle as well. Being short it is much more maneuverable than one with a stock or even the 20" one with a pistol grip. For hunting or walkabout outside I would prefer the rifle stock.

A couple of our "Newbie" rambo type Officers installed them on their issue Mossberg M590 shotguns. Department shotgun qualifications were at 15 and 25 yards. Neither could qualify.

Well, ya made up my mind.. I won't be wasting money there. Thanks for all the quick replies. Since all this posting about the model 14, I could prob use one of those in 6" :)

Have a JIC by the side of my bed, 12g. NOT fun to shoot! Though I bear the pain probably once every two months to make sure I can still hit something. Hard to handle, but personally it's the best choice for a bedside gun there is. The JIC honestly is nothing more than a Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip, so I have been thinking about seeing if I could get a stock for it? Have been busy though too.

Brian,

The only pistol grip that really seems to work is the old "US Marshall" grip, which was straight like the pistol grip stock area on the full shoulder stock; the best results were holding that grip against your hip or waist.

The most common pistol grips on the market now force your wrist to bend too much for any real control.

I tried to post a picture of the grip I'm talking about from a post on this forum dated 10/30/2009:

Click on the link - it opens, I don't know why it won't appear otherwise.

The post from 2009 said they were made by Speedfeed. A copy is now sold by Shockwave technologies.
