Most beautiful U.S. coins....

Our currency used to be works of art.
Notice the words "USED TO BE."
Our currency of late to me appears as little more than monopoly money.

Personally, I would like to see our currency, both paper and coin, return to designs that are works of art. All this "anti-counterfieting" is hogwash.

I have no problem with the obverse on modern coins, but the reverse needs some changing, as was done with the penny. The buffalo-backed Jefferson nickle from a few years back should've stayed.

I like the Sacajawea Dollar.
When I get some, I keep them.
Probably have 20-30.
I also really like the State Quarters.

I collected all of those. Not worth more than twelve fiddy but cool just the same. I have 3 Morgan silver dollars that my dad gave me when I was a kid, all 1881 and in good condition. I wonder who carried those and what they would buy 135 years ago.

I also really like the Morgan's.
When I was an active coin accumulator, I got my hands on some.
Mostly circulated, mostly taken out of circulation.
If I could do it again, I would only collect the Bo Dollars.
I regret that I didn't put more away when they were in circulation, especially while bumming around in Nevada.
Bo Dollar is a Southern term for a silver dollar.
It most likely came from the French-Cajun 'Beau Dollar.'
Meaning a 'real' dollar versus the paper bill.

Up until 1996 Benjamin Franklin had a fur collar to keep him warm and cozy on the $100 bill:

Since then he has been given the cold shoulder treatment:

I know the Benjamin's are the most counterfeited bill around and needs all these latest security additions.
But the first time I ever saw one, somebody was counting me out some money.
Usually a very positive experience!
But when that first I ever saw new Benjamin hit the table I recoiled like he had dropped a live rattlesnake.
It just looks so different!

I like the 2012 Native American Trade Routes Dollar. Its reverse depicts an Indian chief and his horse. If you use one to flip and guess heads you'll never lose! Seriously, it's a good looking reverse. I also like that they sell for face value. When I invest in a dollar coin the return I'm looking for is something like a McDonald's 99 cent hot fudge sundae or any size coffee.

I really like the 5 oz America the Beautiful series. Some really great designs on them.

Question on grading coins.

What are coins that are still in the unopened roll that the mint packaged them in called? They have scratches from passing through the automated manufacturing and packaging process. Are all but the two on the ends that might tarnish from exposure graded "uncirculated" until the roll is opened?

The Most Beautiful U.S. Coin I own is a 1995 Reverse Proof Silver American Eagle. The "reverse proof" feature is striking!! But, both the regular proof and reverse proof are awesome. Here is a picture of a later vintage that shows it well:

I was just about to add a comment on the Silver Eagle when I read this. To me, a very impressive and beautiful coin. I have several in my collection. I also have all the silver proof state quarters as well as regular proof sets. Something the grandkids will get once they get past the age where they'll tear apart the packaging to spend them at the store.

It's funny how our individual eyes see things differently.

Purchased one of these in 2010 from the US Mint, proof 1 oz.

I think they are beautiful.:)

They are gorgeous...our current gold coins seem to be more attractive than our normally circulated bi-metal specimens. No one I know looks at a Roosevelt dime and thinks it attractive.
