Having some crazy ideas lately. I have read intently Green Frog and SteelSlaver’s posts on converting different pistols to .32 caliber. Some of the steps performed are beyond my capability without a lathe and mill.

My original desire is to get a 3” or 4” .32 S&W Long with adjustable sights, but that is proving difficult. I have found a “gunsmith special” model 30 and had the crazy thought of mounting a small red dot sight to it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Certainly not for EDC. The idea is a compact backpack gun to be used for small game. Aging eyes make precise shots with iron sights harder lately

DL Sports makes mounts for larger revolvers but nothing for J Frames.

The area to mount the mount on is probably to small to get a solid attachment and keep dot in place.

If you are willing to go Ruger, there is a 4" version of the SP101 in .327 mag with adjustable (fiber optic) sights. There is at least one supplier of red dot mounts for SP101s with adjustable sights.

Have you tracked the price of these? They have gone through the roof. I tried haphazardly to get one years ago, now that they are not made anymore they have gone nuts on price. Ruger just did a last time build for a distributor of a 3” fixed sight .327, $700+.

I didn't realize (but I'm not surprised) they were removed from the catalog. Even though the 4" sp101 is oddly proportioned (i.e. ugly), I think they would make a great little woods gun. This conversation made me think about dropping the dough on one while they are still floating around, but I have a .32HR Single Six so it makes no sense at all.

Most of the RDS systems are way too large for a J frame. Sight would be as wide-or wider- than the cylinder. Plus, while the frame would partially shield the sight from gas from the B/C gap and the .32 doesn't have great pressures, but dunno what the effect might be.

Retro fitting adjustable sights, OTOH, is doable. Or, maybe go up to a K frame.

In this specific situation I would think a Crimson Trace laser grip may be a good alternative. No magnification but a red dot has none too.

Outdoors in daylight, a laser can be pretty iffy. Green is better than red for that. In low to no light, they are really good. Iron sights for day and laser grip for low light is a compromise, not a bad one for an SD gun.

If you want to see what you're doing in daylight, you need a dot sight. An RDS base can be altered to fit a J frame. The top strap can be drilled and tapped, the same as K,L, or N. Just about anything is doable, if you really want it.
