My LGS got a 629-4 Mountain Gun. All original with S&W rubber grips , no box. They will price it at 850.00. Condition is excellent. Question: How are the different front regular 629-4 other than a lighter barrel? Any issues with those guns ? Price sounds ok? Thank You.

I have a "light barrel" 629,,
the instructions that came with it tell you to test the ammo,,
Some ammo, will pull the bullets out of the unfired rounds, when a round is being shot.
The light 629 does not have the weight to stop the recoil, like a heavier barrel gun.

So, I guess you can only use certain ammo,,,

S&W Mdl 629-4 44Rem Mag.

I like Mountain Guns. I'm always on the look
out for them. I own two now, 44Rem Mag and
45 Colt.

I can tell you this, if I had been there when the
Local Gun Store was putting it out, I would have
bought it, provided it checked out.

Differences than Regular Mdl 629s;
Says Mountain Gun on Barrel.
Cylinder Front edge Chamfered.
Weight; Lighter and trimmer.
Finish in Blued Steel or Stainless Steel.
Have the "Endurance Package" 1990-present.
Firing Pin; on Hammer or Frame Mounted.
Round Butt Grip Frame.
4" Tapered Barrel.
Front Sight Pinned.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

The price is low by at least $150. Stop screwing around and buy it, or tell me where it is.

Edit:
Let me apologize. I had a bottle of wine last night and just reread my post. I think what I meant to say was $850 is what I paid for one four years ago. That’s a fantastic price right now, congrats on your find, and I hope you scored this excellent purchase. The 629-4 was one of the best guns Smith made in my opinion.

My 629-3 Mtn Gun is perhaps my all-time favorite (the 686 is it's close rival). As said above, perhaps the "best" S&W ever put out there. I've carried it extensively and it's just a great sidearm.

I love my pre-lock/mim mountain guns, especially my 2 629-4s. Any pre lock/mim mountain gun under a grand is a good buy.

629-4 MG x2
629-2 Mountain Revolver
625-6 .45 Colt

My 629-4 MG is one of my favorite revolvers. It will handle any full power loads. One of my favorites was a 429421 Keith loaded over 13.5 grains of Blue Dot. Make sure you keep your right thumb locked down and away from the thumb piece. The 629-4 was the best version that Smith made in the 629’s in my opinion.......... tight cylinder throats and excellent machining!

That's my .44 mag grail gun (was the first .44 I ever shot at the age of 16 or so...I still have the target) - if I were you I'd have dropped the money on the spot and ran like the others said, esp in my neck of the woods...

Do it!!

Walked into the lgs last year looking for a G20. They had a 629-2 Mountain Revolver for $600 on consignment. Sold. My favorite handgun. I love shooting it.
