This might have been discussed before sorry if it has.
I'm mounting a nikon 223 scope. ar platform

Is there a proper way to mount. It seems when I mount too far back it's easier to see but hard to pull charging handle.

When I mount forward easier to pull handle but harder to see.

It also seems to be more accurate when mounted back. That might have something to do with clarity.

thoughts or pics of proper mounting I've looked on the internet and have seen them both ways

AR-PEPR QD SCOPE MOUNT W/ PICATINNY TOPS | Brownells

Leupold Mark 2 Integral Mounting System (IMS) 1-Piece Picatinny-Style

What short of mount are you using? I have used both of the above mounts on a number of AR builds and have been very happy with the results and not had an issue finding the "sweet spot." The sweet spot will depend on your eyes and the length of the stock, the one piece mounting systems make it easy to secure the scope in the rings and then play with different slots on the upper. I have not noticed any difficulty charging the bolt with either of the above set ups.

Yes, there is a proper way to mount the scope. You will need to set it where you have the proper eye relief. If too far forward, it is difficult to see through, as you have seen. If mounting it further back interferes with your ability to use the charging handle, they have after market handles that are larger and stick out to the side further to make it easier to use.
