Shipping small handgun collection out of state via
Fedex to a FFL in Idaho. Does FFL need to file 4473 Transfer form/s? Not selling firearms just shipping to relative for storage? Thank you for your replies.

Ship them to the FFL of your relatives choice and then he will fill out the appropriate paperwork.

I moved from Seattle to Arizona with quite a large collection of firearms.....personally I would drive them to Idaho rather than mess with the shipping to an FFL.....you will have to do all the transfer paperwork if you ship and why give the government more ways to track your guns!!!

And....he may have to pay to get the FFL to handle them for him, It's usually $25.00 per gun around here.

Are you moving or selling your collection? If you are moving it, you are NOT transferring ownership so an FFL is not needed. However, if you are selling it and transferring owner ship to another person, then an FFL is needed. When you ship the guns to the FFL, your are transferring the guns to the FFL. Is he going to be expected to "store" the guns until your return? Do you plan to use the FFL to further transfer the gun to some individual in Idaho who will "hold" the guns till your guns until your return? How will you get your guns back when you return? The Idaho person holding the guns will transfer the guns to an Idaho FFL who will transfer them to an FFL in your state who will then transfer them to you? Do you really want to pay all of those transfer fees?

Move the collection yourself and make arrangements in Idaho for storage of the items. Preferably in a safe at a relative's home or in a safe in a bonded warehouse.

Ship them to yourself at his address. He/she CANNOT open them (THAT constitutes "possession"). I was told this when I considered moving to Alaska. BEWARE: Some states (i.e. Cali) require a "re-registration fee"

Transfer!

When a gun is handed(transferred) to another person, BATF considers that a transfer of ownership! That is EXACTLY why we do not want a National Back Ground Check/Transfer Law! If you lend a friend a firearm to go hunting for the day, it is a transfer of ownership and must be handled thru an FFL(you pay)! And, when the gun is returned, it is a transfer(you pay)!
Drive your guns to their new location!

I also like the idea of shipping guns to myself in care of the receiver. No FFL required. A few states (like California) may require registration, etc, but most do not.

Which carrier are you going to use to ship them? Last time I checked neither FedEx nor UPS will ship a gun unless either the shipper or the recipient is an FFL. Lying about the contents could get you in trouble.

Your plan could be interpreted as shipping multiple handguns across state lines for transfer to a non-FFL. I would not do it.

If you ship them to an FFL in Idaho they will not release them to you as you are not an Idaho resident.

For your relative to receive them from the FFL in Idaho they will need a NICS check.

If there are applicable laws in Idaho your relative will need to obey those as well

For you to get the guns back from your relative you will need a NICS check through an FFL in your state of residence and compliance with your state's laws

HOW MUCH ARE THEY WORTH TO YOU?

I've done it on my own ;) 2-3 times & never had any issues (although I could have). The time I went by the book, (LEGAL like) 2 were stolen from my Bros house (in Co) during the long wait for the paperwork to be approved in NY. How far is the drive? ;)
