Hey all,

Last night, I shot a 9 Shield for the first time and I loved the trigger and the grip feel. The recoil was surprisingly very manageable too. It was super comfortable to hold, which I didn't think would be the case considering the reduced width. However, what I didn't appreciate was that I felt as though I was welding with pure light itself with the muzzle flash. Granted, this was range ammo (who knows what they're reloading in those baggies), and maybe this is just what it's like to shoot out of a short barrel. But I was curious to know if anyone likes a particular kind of ammo for this thing better than another, particularly for muzzle flash?

Well, the short barrel is a problem. It just doesn't allow enough time for the powder to completely burn. However, I do like Vihtavouri powder for my own loading. It's almost twice as expensive as any other powder, but it gives a complete burn every time and much lower muzzle flash in all the guns I've used it in.

I agree that reloaders have an edge here for reducing muzzle flash. I use TiteGroup for most all of my 9mm needs and it's flash is minor compared to much of the factory range ammo I've seen.

Flash suppressants cost money, so they aren't usually in cheap range ammo. Corners have to be cut someplace. You will find that high end self defense ammunition have flash suppressants incorporated into their powders.

I don't notice it that much or I'm used to it but I'm buying store bought ammo.

Same here and I have a new PC version with 230 rounds thru it so far. The indoor range I use is not real bright in the lane and while not looking for it specifically I have not had any issues with flash. So far have only used store bought (ie UMC and Blazer Brass) 115 ammo in all my MP 9's, in fact have never used range bought ammo or reloaded my own.
Actually never had an issue or concern with flash with my compact 9 either, and had 1600+ rounds thru that one.

But again, just not something I've noticed or had trouble with.

You don't even notice the flash if you close your eyes before pulling the trigger. I don't do that just kidding but I do think I used to blink. I know that I used to blink when a camera flash went off because we have a lot of pictures of me with my eyes closed. I got a lot of grief from the wife about it and I wasn't trying to close them. Now that I am old my reactions are way slower.
